We ve all heard that calcium is a very important part of our diet and adds to the health and strength of our bones. Well here s some more details as to what calcium is and what it does for us.

Calcium is an essential nutrient and helps to build and maintain strong bones and healthy teeth. But did you know that it also helps to keep your heart beating steadily and works to make your blood, muscles, and nerves functioning properly as well.

Our bodies need a minimum amount of calcium daily. If your diet does not provide you with enough calcium, it has to take it from your bones to make up the difference. Over time this weakens the bones and lead to a disease called osteoporosis which causes weak and brittle bones subject to breakage and other problems in later years.

Most people think that this is a problem which is limited only to women. However that is not the case as men can be affected too. This is why it s very important for them to have plenty of calcium throughout their lives to build strong bone mass and avoid problems later in life.

It is very important to ensure you have plenty of calcium. You can get this through milk or dairy products. As a good rule of thumb, you re not getting enough calcium if you don t drink at least three glasses of milk per day. There are also good calcium supplements if you are unable to digest dairy products.

As we grow, our bones need plenty of calcium. Therefore it is vital for children and teenagers to get the calcium they need. Fortunately most kids and even teens drink plenty of milk so this typically isn t a problem.

However as we age, the amount of milk or dairy products we ingest go down. But it s important to pay attention to this, especially when it comes to pregnant women. The developing babies need calcium from their mother for their bones to form properly.

We should continue to make certain we get enough calcium every day. This can come from milk and dairy products. Calcium is also contained in fresh vegetables like broccoli. And there are many more products available now which are fortified with calcium. This includes fruit juices, cereals, and snack foods.

So as you can see, calcium is a very essential nutrient. A lack of it can cause many health problems but if you pay attention and make certain you eat or drink foods which contains good amounts of calcium throughout your life, you ll avoid many problems later on.

Calcium has several important functions in human body and we know that our daily diet must need calcium as that increases the strength and stamina of our bones. The importance and relevance of calcium to bone health cannot be over-emphasized, as we already know that calcium is very important part of our daily diet and it majorly functions on strengthening of bones.

Interview with Glen Stollery of ScienTOMogy.info

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by on 11-02-2019

Wednesday, April 5, 2006

Glen Stollery is a New Zealand website developer who created the site ScienTOMogy.info in mid 2005. The site, which is a parody of Tom Cruise and his involvement with the Church of Scientology, became the centre of controversy when it was served with a number of cease and desist orders initiated by the Church. On March 19, 2006, Glen issued a media release stating that his web hosting provider, YouTube, had removed videos of Tom Cruise which formed part of the site. The release suggested that YouTube had taken this action under external pressure from Cruise or Viacom.

Responding to a query by Wikinews reporters, YouTube stated “We have not received a DMCA notification letter from Viacom.” The Church of Scientology was offered the opportunity to respond to the claims made by Stollery during the interview. No reply was received.

This exclusive interview deals with these issues and others relating to the website. It was conducted with Glen via email between March 21 and April 3, 2006.

Women in South Africa advancing in fields of science and technology

Tuesday, August 25, 2009

Naledi Pandor, Minister of Science and Technology in South Africa, publicized results of a study on Tuesday on the role of women in the fields of science and technology in the country. Though women only make up thirty-three percent of publishing scientists in the country, their numbers have increased in recent years. When compared to a similar study from 2004, trends show increased enrollment of women in higher education.

Pandor was disappointed by the dearth of individuals that attended the announcement of the results of the study at the Parliament of South Africa. “It shows the degree to which science does – or doesn’t – matter to South Africans,” said Pandor. Prior to her role as Minister of Science and Technology, Pandor had served as Minister of Education of South Africa.

“It shows the degree to which science does – or doesn’t – matter to South Africans.”

Professor Anusuya Chinsamy-Turan, a woman scientist in South Africa, commented to News24 that some educational organizations in the country were “really, really hostile to women”.

Pandor highlighted problems affecting women and specifically black women in the country from increased participation in science, including “financial difficulties before and during tertiary studies, gender stereotyping, legacies of disadvantage in black communities, negative dynamics at workplaces, and the lack of attention to women’s specific needs”.

Women in the country are advancing against men in science fields, particularly engineering, agricultural studies and biology. At present there are a greater number of women than men among enrollments for degrees in higher education, and among individuals obtaining those degrees. According to The Times, “their biggest gain has been in health sciences, where women earned more than half the doctorates awarded in 2005”. Pandor emphasized a current need for additional women to enter the fields of technology and engineering.

The announcement at Parliament in South Africa was part of the launch of the “Facing the Facts 2009” booklet, which was published by a sub-committee of the National Advisory Council on Innovation (NACI), Science, Engineering and Technology for Women (SET4W). Dr. Romilla Maharaj of SET4W presented the report to Parliament, and stated that enrollment by women in higher education had increased by one percent from a previous study. Dr. Maharaj noted that women were still currently in the minority among individuals with degrees in higher education.

Disney buys Pixar

The Walt Disney Company has finalized a US$7.4 billion deal to acquire its long-time partner Pixar in an all stock buy-out. The deal will make Steve Jobs, current Pixar and Apple CEO, Disney’s largest shareholder with about 7% (valued at over $3.5 billion) and a member of the board of directors.

The merger was speculated all day Tuesday on the stock market and the announcement came just after trading closed for the day. Terms of the merger include Pixar’s John Lasseter becoming Disney’s new chief creative officer in charge of animation at the combined Disney-Pixar Animation Studios, as well as principal creative advisor at Walt Disney Imagineering, the unit of the company responsible for research and development of Disney theme parks worldwide.

Jobs purchased what became Pixar for $10 million in 1986 from George Lucas’s computer animation division at Lucasfilm. Toy Story, its first feature film came a decade later, and began a long string of animation hits, including Finding Nemo. Such successes proved to be increasingly elusive for Disney to manage on its own. The partnership between the two studios had become shaky in recent years, as former Disney head Michael Eisner clashed with Jobs over the renewal terms of their agreement. In 2003, prior to his dismissal from Disney, Eisner infuriated Pixar’s creative team by predicting Finding Nemo would be a failure. Steve Jobs broke off negotiations in January 2004, having told one executive previously, “I don’t see how the relationship can continue as long as Eisner is there.”

Florida man charged with stealing Wi-Fi

This article mentions that Wi-Fi stands for “Wireless Fidelity”, although this is disputed.

Thursday, July 7, 2005

A Florida man is being charged with 3rd degree felony for logging into a private Wi-Fi (Wireless Fidelity) Internet access point without permission. Benjamin Smith III, 41, is set for a pre-trial hearing this month in the first case of its kind in the United States.

This kind of activity occurs frequently, but often goes undetected by the owners of these wireless access points (WAPs). Unauthorized users range from casual Web browsers, to users sending e-mails, to users involved in pornography or even illegal endeavours.

According to Richard Dinon, owner of the WAP Smith allegedly broke into, Smith was using a laptop in an automobile while parked outside Dinon’s residence.

There are many steps an owner of one of these access points can take to secure them from outside users. Dinon reportedly knew how to take these steps, but had not bothered because his “neighbors are older.”

Charlie the smoking chimpanzee dies aged 52

Charlie, a Chimpanzee in a South African zoo who became addicted to cigarettes, has died at the age of 52, exceeding the average lifespan of a captive chimpanzee by twelve years. After a video of Charlie puffing on cigarettes discarded by visitors appeared on the Internet, the animal and the zoo gained international attention and some visitors threw him additional cigarettes.

According to his keepers, Charlie was “an occasional smoker” and even tried to hide his habit from his keepers, who were trying to get him to quit by giving him medical care and a special diet. A recent study found that only seven percent of chimpanzees in captivity live beyond forty years of age. It is estimated that 500,000 people die due to smoking-related diseases every year in the United States alone.

It is believed that Charlie learned to smoke during his time in a US circus before being transferred to the zoo. Zookeepers say that the animal died of old age but an autopsy has yet to confirm this. The zoo suggested that Charlie’s body could be stuffed and put on display.

For those with missing teeth, smiling can be uncomfortable. No one wants to expose their missing teeth, especially to someone they have just met. This makes it difficult to be social in many different situations. Not only are there the cosmetic issues involved, but missing teeth can also cause you to have difficulty in chewing and digesting certain foods, as well as being able to eat foods you once could enjoy. This can make life stressful for many people. With the latest advancements in dental care, there are now Tooth Implant in Kailua-Kona procedures. With these implants, missing teeth are replaced and your smile is restored.

When scheduled for your procedure, you will need to make sure you follow your dentist’s instructions. Since this is a surgical procedure, you will most likely need to avoid eating or drinking before the procedure and will need to avoid certain medications, like aspirin. Following these instructions can help your procedure to go much more smoothly. At your appointment, you will first be given anesthesia. The type you receive will depend on the amount of Tooth Implant in Kailua-Kona you are having done. If it is only one tooth, you may only need a local anesthesia, but if you are having multiple teeth replaced, you will most likely have general.

To put the implant in place, the dentist will make a small incision in the gum. Then, he or she will place the metal anchor through the gum tissue and into the bone structure, so it will hold permanently. This surgical steel anchor will be stitched into place and your gums will need time to heal before the next step in the process of getting a tooth implant in Kailua-Kona is accomplished.

Dentists normally have their patients to heal for about three weeks before they allow them to get the teeth put on their anchors. Once these teeth are in place, your smile will be completely restored and fully functioning again. If you are missing teeth and would like to learn how dental implants can help you, contact Yokoyama, Carter S. DDS and make an appointment for a consultation today.

Retired U.S. vets sue Donald Rumsfeld for excessive service cutbacks

Tuesday, May 31, 2005

One thousand residents of the Defense Department-managed Armed Forces Retirement Home in Washington, D.C. filed a class-action lawsuit on May 24, asserting that the cut-backs in medical and dental services imposed by Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld are illegal. The operating budget for the home was reduced from $63 million in 2004 to $58 million for 2005. The residents cite cuts in on-site X-ray, electrocardiogram, physical and dental services, and the closing of the home’s main clinic and an on-site pharmacy.

Chief Financial Officer Steve McManus responded that the changes not only save money but also achieved improved efficiencies. “We’re really trying to improve the benefits to our residents,” he said.

Most of the home’s costs are paid for by a trust fund and monthly fees paid by residents. By law, the Armed Forces Retirement Homes are required to fund, “on-site primary care, medical care and a continuum of long-term care services.”

Apple to hold media event on September 1, may update iPods and Apple TV

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by on 08-02-2019

Friday, August 27, 2010

Apple Inc. will hold a music-centered event in San Francisco, California on September 1. It has been widely speculated that the company will introduce an updated line of iPod portable music players and a new Apple TV.

The company e-mailed invitations for the event to various media organizations on Wednesday. The message included a picture of a guitar and the time of the event. Apple did not release any information about what products would be involved.

Apple has released new iPods through previous similar events in September in anticipation of the holiday shopping season. This year, Apple may unveil a new iPod Touch with two cameras, similar to their recent iPhone 4 design. It will likely also update the iTunes music store and software.

Speculation about a new Apple TV is mixed. While many blogs are reporting that a refresh of the device will be announced, analysts say that it is unlikely to happen during next Wednesday’s event. According to Reuters, sources are saying that Apple is negotiating with major television networks, including ABC and NBC, in order to provide shows for purchase on iTunes. However, they also reported that the deal has not been completed, and none of the companies involved have commented on the rumors.

It has also been rumored that Apple will introduce a new online music service. In 2009, Apple took over a company that allowed users to stream music online rather than download individual songs. Apple has not confirmed the rumors.

Last September’s media event saw the return of Apple CEO Steve Jobs after he took a break to undergo a liver transplant. This year, the event will be held in San Francisco’s Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, previously used by Apple in April for the unveiling of the iPad.
