Five Europeans are released in Ethiopia

A group of British embassy workers kidnapped in northern Ethiopia 12 days ago have been released, Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett has said. The workers – four British citizens and one French citizen and Ethiopian staff working with them, had been held in Eritrea, she announced on Tuesday.

The party were apparently on a sightseeing tour when they were abducted on 1 March. Beckett also said that all kidnapped were safe and well and were:

…broadly all in good health…

The group went missing on March 1 on a tourist trip to visit geological sites in the remote Afar region, in the country’s north. Two vehicles belonging to the group were later found in a north-eastern village called Hamedali. The vehicles were found were riddled with bullets, but still contained luggage and mobile telephones.

The region in which the Hamedali is, Afar, straddles the border of Ethiopia and Eritrea. Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Meles Zenawi had said on Monday that Ethiopian officials had a “good idea” of where the hostages were being held.

Zenawi announced that embassy staff had not been specifically targeted and suggested that the kidnapping might have been a “mistake”. Hamedali is a staging post for tourists venturing into the unique geological formations of the Danakil Depression, including the area’s famous salt lakes. The area is one of the hottest and inhospitable lands on Earth. Visitors are warned by the government to travel in a convoy with armed guards because of rebels and bandits. Witnesses stated that around 50 men burst Hamedali and marched the foreigners towards the Eritrean border.

Thaksin to return to Thai politics

Several reports indicate that the ousted fugitive ex-Prime Minister of Thailand, Thaksin Shinawatra, is to again become involved in the country’s politics. He is scheduled to give another phone-in address from abroad on December 14 to supporters at the national Suphachalasai Stadium.

People’s Power Party (PPP) MP, and spokesman for the pro-government “Truth Today” roadshow Jatuporn Promphan said, “Thaksin will no longer wait to be attacked, he will fight back by all means, particularly with an eye-for-an-eye strategy, from now on. Thaksin now believes that the only way for him to survive and to live is to fight for his name”.

Currently in exile and facing a two year jail term should he return to Thailand, Thaksin informed lawyers from his current residence in Dubai that he would not appeal the conviction for corruption in the Ratchadapisek land deal. While lawyers claim to have prepared the needed paperwork to challenge the conviction, the deadline to do so is today.

Thaksin will no longer wait to be attacked, he will fight back by all means, particularly with an eye-for-an-eye strategy

According to the Bangkok Post, a return to politics by the ex-PM has caused some concern among PPP government members over the divisions this could cause within the country. Thaksin still enjoys a great deal of support from the rural poor in the country’s North-East where the populist policies of his now-outlawed Thai Rak Thai (TRT) party helped win a majority. His most vocal critics, the People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD) have now occupied Government House in Bangkok for over three months.

The close association of the ruling PPP with the former premier has given them their own set of problems. The party is actively contesting a case in the country’s supreme court that could see it dissolved. The case centres around allegations of vote buying and the party’s former deputy leader, Yongyuth Tiyapairat, stands accused of paying village heads for votes. The PPP disputes that this was a party action as opposed to the independent actions of Yongyuth and the other accused. A ruling on the fraud from last December’s election is expected soon.

Critics of the government claim that it is simply a front for the ex-PM and his dissolved party. The yellow-shirted PAD protesters at Government House assert that current Prime Minister, Somchai Wongsawat, Thaksin’s brother-in-law, is merely a proxy for the controversial ex-leader.

Prosecution of Thaksin on other charges, which he maintains are politically motivated, continues; the supreme court is expected to hold a hearing next month on accusations that he is ‘unusually rich’. This relates to the sale of the family’s stake in Shin Corporation to Temasek Holdings, the investment arm of the Singapore government. Assets worth 76 billion baht (US$ 2.2 billion) are currently frozen over this issue. The ex-PM escaped impeachment over the tax-free sale of Shin in February 2006. Thai media reports that an amicable divorce of Thaksin and his wife Pojaman in Hong Kong will have no bearing on the case or asset seizure. Despite the split last week neither can return to Thailand without facing imprisonment; Potjam was earlier successfully prosecuted and given a three year sentence.

Concern about sovereign debt of some EU members roils markets

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by on 28-07-2018

Friday, February 5, 2010

Global stock markets fell steeply on Thursday on investor concerns about the growing sovereign debts of European Union member states Greece, Portugal, and Spain. A report of a rise in weekly jobless claims in the United States contributed to the market gloom. The MSCI World index fell the most in over nine months. Currency and commodities markets also posted major moves.

If other European countries are having trouble like Greece, then it’s a big problem for banks, and the banks are the foundation for everything.

The euro fell more than one percent against the US dollar to an eight-month low; against the yen it fell 2.2%, approaching a one-year low. The price of crude oil fell 5% to US$73.14 per barrel and gold slid 4.4% to US$1,063 per ounce.

Greece’s Prime Minister, George Papandreou, announced an austerity program, but that is now threatened by plans by the largest trade union for a national strike. In 2009, Greece’s budget deficit was 12.7% of the nation’s gross domestic product (GDP). Papandreou’s plan called for that to drop to 3% by 2012.

Gary Jenkins of Evolution Securities told the Financial Times, “[t]he risk aversion trade is back on as the debt problems of Europe are for the first time bringing down global markets. Corporate earnings may come in strongly [in the US], but investors are more concerned about the possible default of a sovereign European nation.”

“This is a sovereign problem, and it’s hitting everything,” said Keith Springer of Capital Financial Advisory Services to Reuters. “If other European countries are having trouble like Greece, then it’s a big problem for banks, and the banks are the foundation for everything. European banks will be in trouble and that will carry over to all stocks.”

“The focus is shifting toward Spain and Portugal, where the deficit-reduction plans have been far less ambitious than Greece,” said Kornelius Purps of UniCredit Markets & Investment Banking to Bloomberg.

Concerns in Portugal centered on political tension surrounding a regional spending bill. In Spain, the source of worry was reportedly because the government backed down from promised pension reform.

European Central Bank President Jean-Claude Trichet sought to ease investor fears, in part by noting that the deficit in the US is expected to hit 10% of GDP in 2010, compared with about 6% in the eurozone. He said that he was “confident” that Greece is moving in the right direction.

Trichet did admit that it is of “paramount importance” for Greece, Portugal and Spain to get their public finances under control.

Introduction To Irrigation System Design 101

Filed Under (Irrigation) by on 28-07-2018

Submitted by: John Hoffman

It is my opinion there are two types of irrigation systems, landscapes and gardens with the same goals in mind, to have water for plant growth and conservation. Regardless the purpose of you reading this introduction, I am presenting a few basic principles of irrigation system design to, hopefully, answer some questions that you have regarding this topic.

There are two basic items required to operate a sprinkler, water flow and pressure. A lot of us think in terms of water flow. How much water do I need for my system. It is an important consideration; however, an equally important question is, how much pressure will I have at the sprinkler? This is critical! Why? For illustrative purposes, let us hook up a sprinkler to a short piece of garden hose and at the other end insert a funnel.. Now pour a five gallon bucket of down the hose to the sprinkler. What is happening? Nothing! Why didn’t it work? There was plenty of water, 5 gals; well, the water poured down the hose had insufficient pressure to make the sprinkler function. Water pressure is the energy that allows the sprinkler to do what it was designed for, spread water.

In an ideal world, when one turns on the water at the source, the water pressure at the destination would be the same. Wrong! Some of pressure is lost when the water goes through the water meter. More is lost as it moves through the various pipes in your yard and home. Squeezing through valves eats up more pressure. Simply put, everything that the water encounters in its travel from the source to the final destination, the sprinkler uses up a small amount of water pressure.

Alas, we have the key to a good sprinkler system design. There must be sufficient pressure left to permit the sprinkler to function for what it was designed to do. Employing the correct sizes of pipes, valves, etc, one can control the amount water pressure loss in the irrigation system, and that, my dear reader, is what sprinkler system design is all about.

There you have it in a nutshell. Easy. All you have to do is control the pressure throughout the system.

There are 5 basic steps to sprinkler system design.

1. Measure your yard. Accurately measure your yard and then sketch out the area to be irrigated. After that some information needs to be obtained. What is gallons per minute (GPM) and water pressure which is measured in pounds per square inch (PSI).

2. Exam the things that can reduce your water pressure as the water moves to the sprinkler.

3. Start drawing the sprinkler system on paper.

4. Divide your sprinkler system into zones and layout the piping routes. This is where we are going to make the right decisions to create a sprinkler system that uses less water than most and gives one healthier plants. A major cause of turf disease and wasted water is poor sprinkler design.

5. Determine the size of each pipe and clean up a few small details. Examine the practicality of automating the sprinkler system.

Essentially, this is a basic concept for irrigation system design. Below I have a few reminders and additional notes:

Automatic controllers: For automatic systems you will need a controller (often called a “timer”) with one “station” for each valve.

Isolation valves: It’s a good idea to install a manual shut-off valve at the point where your irrigation system connects to the water supply.

Wires for valves: For wires going to the automatic valves use wire made specially to be buried. Most people use a special direct burial cable made for irrigation systems. The cable contains 3, or more, separate, 18 gauge wires. On commercial systems the standard wire used is “#14-1 AWG-UF” which is a single strand, direct burial type wire. One white color “common” wire goes from the controller to every valve, and one individual “lead” wire of a color other than white goes to each valve from the controller.

Che Guevara’s ”Motorcycle Diaries” companion dies

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by on 28-07-2018

Wednesday, March 9, 2011

Alberto Granado Jiménez, the Argentinian biochemist who was Che Guevara’s companion on his transformative motorcycle trip through South America, died in Havana on Saturday, reported Cuban state television. He was 88 and died of natural causes.

The politically active Jiménez met Ernesto “Che” Guevara, then a medical student, in Hernando, Argentina where Guevara had gone to play rugby. Both were intellectually curious and interested in exploration. In 1951 they set out on an eight-month motorcycle trip through South American that exposed them to the poverty in which most South Americans lived. The pair worked in a leprosy colony and met wtih destitute miners and indigenous people. Both men kept diaries which served as the basis for the 2004 film, The Motorcycle Diaries, produced by Robert Redford and directed by Walter Salles.

According to the Guardian, “Their road trip awoke in Guevara a social consciousness and political convictions that would turn him into one of the iconic revolutionaries of the 20th century.” The trip is widely believed to have inspired Guevara to go to Cuba and join Fidel Castro in his 1959 revolt against Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista.

By the time the two men met again eight years later, Guevara was a revolutionary hero and chief of Cuba’s central bank. Jiménez, who had remained in Argentina working in a clinic, accepted Guevara’s invitation to move to Cuba in 1961 and founded a medical facility in Santiago. Later he moved to Havana where he continued his medical work. The two remained friends although they did not always agree. Jiménez rejected Guevara’s belief that social reform in Latin America had to be accomplished through guerrilla warfare.

The book The Motorcycle Diaries was published in the 1990’s. Jiménez said of the book that it inspired the image of the young Che as a romantic figure.

Jiménez authored the book Traveling with Che Guevara: The Making of a Revolutionary, published in 2003.

Plane crash in Equatorial Guinea kills 55

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by on 27-07-2018

Sunday, July 17, 2005

An Equatair plane carrying 55 people crashed on Saturday soon after take-off near the capital of Equatorial Guinea, Malabo. Witnesses told AFP the Antonov aircraft bound for Bata suddenly caught fire and crashed in a forest near Baney, a town some 19km from the capital. “No one survived — the plane was destroyed,” said Alfonso Nsue Mokuy, the Information minister of E Guinea, after rescue teams arrived at the crash site on Sunday.

The old propeller-machine took off at about 10am local time (9am UTC) and disappeared from the radar soon after, officials said.

Flying in Africa is considerably more dangerous than in other parts of the world. While accounting for only 3% of worldwide air traffic, 27% of all fatal airplane crashes occur in Africa according to Dutch-based Aviation Safety Network. This is blamed on the chronic under-investment many airline companies on the continent suffer from.

Pleasure Your Dog with a Pink Dog Bed

by

Allan Michael Taylor

You may be asking yourself whether or not dogs actually like pink dog beds. Sure, they may not realize the fuss; but let’s face it, pink is a fun color. And when you can get a dog bed which is both cool and comfy, you get to meet the 2 principles of style features and sparkle.

Pink dog beds are becoming increasingly popular in the market nowadays. They are available in a wide range of styles and types. Some are simple padded pads, although some are circular or even flower-shaped. There’s also designer beds and nesting dog beds; some may also be used as pet carriers or easily transportable dog houses. If you’re searching for one of those cute beds, you’ll want to look into the foregoing.

Product Features

If you don’t intend for your dog bed to end up merely as a decoration, then you need to be cautious in regards to the product specs, particularly the dimensions. You would would like your dog to be cozy, hence there must be plenty of space for adjusting. It does not have to be very spacious, your pet should be able to stretch and move around just a little. Notice that most pink dog beds in the market are targeted for more compact dogs therefore if your dog is larger, you want to look around more. Apart from the sizing, you might also check on the weight limit, to ensure the filling is sufficient to carry the weight of your pet. If you are looking for a transportable bed, be sure to think about the weight of the dog bed too.

Fabric

Dog beds also come in an array of fabrics, some are made of plastic material and others are covered with micro fiber. Remember that when it comes to dog beds, it’s not necessarily just the lining that you should consider. Support is really the name of the game. A well-padded dog bed is going to be best for your small dog’s joints. The cover should also be able to stand up to pawing as well as biting. Otherwise, your home would end up getting cotton stuffing scattered all over. It might also be hazardous for your dog if it ingests the padding.

Maintenance

Dog beds can be tough to clean. It would help if you get one with a waterproof lining. If it doesn’t have that, you possibly can at a minimum have it covered using a waterproof sheet. Whether or not your dog is well-trained, mishaps may well take place; and we are not merely talking about your dog’s kidney habits. Some liquid canisters could easily get knocked over or your pet might hop on the bed immediately after stepping on something gross. A zippered cover would be a nice attribute, as it is readily washable.

The fact is, pink can be very pretty. Your adorable dog isn’t likely to look washed out when sitting on a pink bed. Quite the opposite; they’d seem even more lovable. Nobody can really know whether dogs might enjoy sitting on pink dog beds, however given that it’s a soft, comfortable pink dog bed, all is ok.

US to sell precision-guided bombs to Saudi Arabia

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by on 27-07-2018

Tuesday, January 15, 2008

The Bush administration officially notified Congress Monday of its intention to sell sophisticated precision-guided bombs to Saudi Arabia. The action, coinciding with President Bush’s visit to Saudi Arabia, is part of a broader U.S. effort to bolster Gulf allies in the face of a more assertive Iran. VOA’s David Gollust reports from the State Department.

The Bush administration has already briefed Congress on its arms sales plans for Saudi Arabia. Monday’s announcement sets in motion a 30-day period in which the House and Senate can block the plan with a joint resolution – an action that appears highly unlikely.

Under the proposed deal, worth more than $120 million, the United States would provide Saudi Arabia with 900 kits and associated equipment to convert conventional gravity bombs into GPS-guided smart-bombs, known as JDAMs.

The weapons are a mainstay of the U.S. military arsenal and their accuracy would vastly enhance the capability of the Saudi Air Force, which has top-of-the-line U.S.-made fighter-bomber aircraft.

The sale is part of a broader $20-billion arms package for Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states announced by Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Defense Secretary Robert Gates last August on a mission to the Gulf, aimed at shoring up U.S. allies concerned about Iranian influence in the region.

Several elements of the broader package including sales of Patriot anti-missile systems to Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates, and upgrades for Saudi Arabia’s AWACS airborne command and control planes, have already gotten congressional assent. Officials here say they also expect the Saudi J-DAMS sale to proceed despite concerns expressed by some congressional supporters of Israel.

At the time the Gulf weapons sales package was announced last year, the Bush administration also committed to a 10-year, $30-billion arms package for Israel, representing a 25 per cent increase in annual U.S. arms aid to that country.

Briefing reporters, State Department Spokesman Sean McCormack said the administration has assured Congress it would do nothing to upset Israel’s military edge over potential enemies in the region.

“We’ve spent a lot of time assuring that we abide by our commitments to a qualitative military edge for Israel,” said Sean McCormack. “This is something that President Reagan first talked about and it’s been reiterated and reconfirmed by each successive president after that. We’re committed to maintaining that qualitative military edge for Israel.”

Israel itself has not protested the pending sale. Israeli officials have said they anticipate being provided with a new-generation U.S. smart bomb more capable than J-DAMS, which have been in service for more than a decade.

A spokesman for House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Tom Lantos, a prominent advocate for Israel in Congress, said he does not intend to push a resolution of disapproval.

However one House member, New York Democrat Anthony Weiner, said he would introduce such a measure and already has more than 30 co-sponsors.

Critics of the package have faulted Saudi Arabia’s record in combating terrorism and advancing political reform. Under questioning here, Spokesman McCormack said the Saudi government has made “quantum leaps” in action against terrorist cells and financing in recent years and has begun the process of reform, though not necessarily at a pace that would please some critics.

Two-thirds majorities of the members in both houses would be required to block the sale and officials here say chances for that appear nil.
