Enhancing A Yard With Landscaping

by

Rogelio_A

Landscaping is the process of altering a yard in order to enhance the look of the property. This practice is commonly accomplished by placing flowers, plants, trees, and yard decor in order to enhance a yard or lawn. This is a common way to spruce up a yard or property, which can be done by the property owner or by hiring a company.

In order to make the look of a smaller yard appear larger and more pleasing to the eye there are some guidelines to follow. The limited space of a small yard makes adding all of the different plants and other landscaping essentials wanted a bit more difficult than larger areas. To make sure the available area is properly used various levels and a stair step effect can be valuable to adding more space to a small lawn. Adding levels to a lawn requires adding more soil to make a lawn grow upward instead of outward. Levels allow more space to a yard by simply building a foundation for a yard by adding materials in order to make a base for flowers and plant life that is higher instead of wider. A stair step effect can be used to give the plant life different proportions to grow from. Finished levels should resemble a stair case with different types of vegetation on each level. This adds more depth to a smaller yard, making the yard appear larger than it actually is.

Any type of yard can be enhanced by introducing different types of plants to a lawn. Planting trees make a yard look like a wide open space, and are a beautiful addition to any yard. Flower gardens can also be added to properties to make the area look extremely pretty. Any types of flowers desired are available for purchase and can be added to lawns. Shrubbery can be planted in a yard to cover up fences that can be eyesores, or actually replace and act as a fence. Another aspect to landscaping that can be beneficial is vegetable gardens. Vegetable gardens are a wonderful addition to any lawn that can also produce delicious food.

Ozzy Osbourne’s personal possessions fetch $800,000 for charity

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by on 18-07-2018

Sunday, December 2, 2007

American heavy metal performer Ozzy Osbourne, who became famous as the lead vocalist for Black Sabbath and later as a solo act, has raised more than US$800,000 for The Sharon Osbourne Colon Cancer Program, founded by his spouse Sharon Osbourne at the Cedars Sinai Hospital, by auctioning off personal items.

A number of the items that he auctioned off over the two day period have been seen on his reality TV show The Osbournes, which featured home life with Sharon, Ozzy and their two children. Amongst some of the higher-priced items were a carved walnut Victorian-style custom built pool table which raised $11,250, a painting from Edourad Drouot which fetched $10,500, a pair of Ozzy’s famous round glasses which raised $5,250 and a dog bed given to Sharon by Elton John which sold for $2,375.

Some more famous items were also amongst the 500 lots offered. Ozzy’s black satin coat, complete with bat-wing cape, raised $3,300 and a hand-painted floral cup used regularly on The Osbournes made $1,625. A bronze plaque of a demon’s head that was regularly seen in its position adorning the front door of their house had been expected to go for $800 to $1,200instead raised $8,750. A wire model of the Eiffel Tower from on the kitchen table sold for $10,000, while skull-covered trainers Ozzy had worn reached $2,625. Bidders came from as far away as Germany to buy what they could from his mansion in Beverly Hills, California.

However, three cars included in the auction failed to attract bidders and did not sell. They were a 2006 Bentley Continental Flying Spur, estimated at $160,000 to $180,000, a 2005 Cadillac CTS-V sedan estimated at $30,000 to $40,000 and a 1950 Oldsmobile Futuramic 88 Club Coupe previously owned by author Danielle Steel estimated at $40,000 to $50,000. Sharon had earlier said of the cars “We’re not great car people. They really don’t do a lot for us.

Darren Julien, president of Julien’s Auctions, which organised the two-day sale, said “It did very well. It raised some good money for a very worthy cause.”

“For a celebrity garage sale, it was pretty spectacular.,” he went on. He also commented on the fact that there was fierce competition for the many artworks included. “We had Ozzy fans bidding against these sophisticated fine art buyers, which you don’t see every day. For the most part the metalheads were outbidding the art crowd.”

The Onion: An interview with ‘America’s Finest News Source’

Despite the hopes of many University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW) students, The Onion was not named after their student center. “People always ask questions about where the name The Onion came from,” said President Sean Mills in an interview with David Shankbone, “and when I recently asked Tim Keck, who was one of the founders, he told me the name—I’ve never heard this story about ‘see you at the un-yun’—he said it was literally that his Uncle said he should call it The Onion when he saw him and Chris Johnson eating an onion sandwich. They had literally just cut up the onion and put it on bread.” According to Editorial Manager Chet Clem, their food budget was so low when they started the paper that they were down to white bread and onions.

Long before The Daily Show and The Colbert Report, Heck and Johnson envisioned a publication that would parody the news—and news reporting—when they were students at UW in 1988. Since its inception, The Onion has become a veritable news parody empire, with a print edition, a website that drew 5,000,000 unique visitors in the month of October, personal ads, a 24 hour news network, podcasts, and a recently launched world atlas called Our Dumb World. Al Gore and General Tommy Franks casually rattle off their favorite headlines (Gore’s was when The Onion reported he and Tipper were having the best sex of their lives after his 2000 Electoral College defeat). Many of their writers have gone on to wield great influence on Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert‘s news parody shows.

And we are sorry to break the news to all you amateur headline writers: your submissions do not even get read.

Below is David Shankbone’s interview with Chet Clem and Sean Mills about the news empire that has become The Onion.

Japanese detain two anti-whaling activists, deny abuse claims

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by on 18-07-2018

Wednesday, January 16, 2008

Yesterday at 6:00 UTC at 60° S 78° E , a Japanese whaling ship detained two Sea Shepherd Conservation Society activists in the Southern Ocean. Japan’s Institute of Cetacean Research (IRC) deny Sea Shepherd claims that they have been abused. The Japanese government has assured the Australian Government the release of the men.

According to the conservation agency Sea Shepherd, Australian Benjamin Potts, 28, a helicopter assistant, and Briton Giles Lane, an engine room worker, were detained on board a Yushin Maru No. 2 after delivering a letter asking the ship to exit Antarctic waters .

Captain Paul Watson of the Sea Shepherd’s vessel, Steve Irwin, said that the Japanese “tried to throw them overboard, then they tied them to a bulkhead and were beating them”.

He alleged that the men were tied to the radar masts before being brought below deck after which the men were not seen. Sea Shepherd’s international director, Jonny Vasic, claimed that they were “basically strapped by the arms with zip-ties and tied with rope around their chests” for 2½ to three hours.

The captain said he was surprised as he expected Japanese whale ships to treated his men more decently.

“We are concerned but I know the Australian and British governments are in touch with the Japanese government.”

Sea Shepherd said it has photographic evidence that the whalers were abusing the men.

However, the Japanese ship refuted the allegations.

“Any accusations that we have tied them up or assaulted them are completely untrue,” Director-general of the IRC Minoru Morimoto said in the press release, “It is illegal to board another country’s vessels on the high seas.”

Detaining the activists was the “only way”, he said. “You couldn’t have them running around the deck not knowing what they’re going to do.”

He said that the activists were making attempts to entangle the screw and were throwing bottles of butyric acid, as rancid butter, onto the deck of the vessel before boarding the vessel. Mr Watson has confirmed this and said that they were to act as a stink bomb but their actions were still peaceful.

Hideki Moronuki, the chief of the whaling section of The Fisheries Agency of Japan, claimed that “nobody took violent action against the two illegal intruders”.

Mr. Moronuki said that they were treated “very, very humanely” and were provided with “a warm, delicious hot meal”, “[a] warm, nice bath” and “[a] nice bed with clean white sheets”.

Australian foreign minister Stephen Smith said that the Japanese government promised him the release of the men late yesterday night.

“Late last night I was advised the Japanese had agreed to this and they had instructed the relevant whaling ship to return the men to the Steve Irwin,” he told ABC radio.

Mr. Moronuki said the “two illegal intruders” will not be released by the vessel’s captain until “Paul Watson has accepted the conditions of the safety of the Japanese vessel”. He said he knew nothing of the comments that the Japanese government agreeing to release the men.

Mr. Watson said the Japanese were “[holding] hostages and make demands” and were acting like “a terrorist organisation”. A press release said Sea Shepherd “will not negotiate with poachers and demands that the Japanese whalers release Benjamin Potts and Giles Lane as soon as possible”.

Mr. Watson said he would not send a zodiac to collect the men as requested in an email because it “endangers the life of the crew, to put them out in these waters in a small boat, 10 miles out of view”.

On Sky TV, IRC spokesman Glenn Inwood said Sea Shepherd were “not answering phone calls or emails at this stage” to take advantage of “fair amount of media coverage” but they were “still making attempts to contact them”.

An Australian Federal Police spokeswoman said that Sea Shepherd made a police report at around 7:00 UTC.

Owl Energy Monitor Compared to Current Cost Envi

by

Katrina Wagner

A great many people have yet to implement a program of Greening their lives as it is still a rather new idea for many. There is some trepidation regarding the effect that it might have on their lives and it conjures up images of minimalism and a reduction of our current lifestyle. This is not, of course, the case. While you can adopt some of the more extreme adaptations that serve to reduce our Carbon Footprint if you put your mind to it, the march of technology is changing all that.

Common Sense Conservation

Few families have not yet attempted to teach the value of conservation to their children using such phrases as Please turn off the telly if you not watching it! or Why is that light on in the daytime? It was never about the environment, but about not wasting energy instead. The Owl Energy monitor is an example of industry tapping common sense to create real solutions.

A number of these energy monitors are on the market now and they offer a common sense means of demonstrating the value of conservation. They are easy to install; you simply attach an electricity sensor to the power cord of the device you wish to monitor and activate the monitor. The amount of electricity your device is using will be shown on a digital display as well as the cost, once you program your rates into the device. A few things you should consider include whether or not you wish to monitor a three-phase circuit, which would require a more expensive device, as well as the number of devices you wish to monitor.

Units are available that can be connected to your home or business PC as well. These devices allow you to collect the data and analyse it. There are always more options and higher cost units, nevertheless units such as the Owl Energy Monitor are simple, low cost and allow you to benefit from monitoring without making a big commitment of hours or pounds.

Making it Real in Your Life

One of the more advanced units is the Current Cost Envi RRP. This unit will track the energy usage of up to 9 separate appliances and store that information in your PC with the addition of a data cable and special individual appliance monitors. While this is a more costly solution that requires a bit more setup, it could be worth the time and the money.

If you are ready for that then you already know what you want; however, for the rest of us a simple solution is the natural desire to conserve. The Owl Energy Monitor is a simple solution. Attach it to the telly and watch the tariff rise; they demonstrate to the little ones the real difference that little things can make. You could convert the savings into other terms like carbon savings, or oil not burned to increase the impact of the knowledge. Most of us will do nothing if we are asked to do what we do not understand. The Owl Energy Monitor is a simple way to start small and have a real impact.

Lansing, Michigan airport designated ‘aerotropolis’

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by on 18-07-2018

Saturday, December 24, 2011

On Wednesday the Lansing, Michigan Capital Region International Airport and surrounding land was designated as an “aerotropolis” by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation Strategic Fund board. The Next Michigan Development program allows the airport to offer tax incentives in order to attract manufacturing, distribution, and technology businesses to the surrounding area.

Incentives can include property tax abatements or the elimination of most state and local taxes for a specified period of time. To qualify for the incentives, a company would have to start a new venture on airport property or expand an existing one. Additionally, companies need to use a minimum of two out of four transportation modes – freight, air, rail, or water.

The airport, in DeWitt Township, is the second in Michigan to receive an aerotropolis designation. The state’s other aerotropolis is located in the area surrounding Detroit Metropolitan and Willow Run airports. In October the city of Lansing and DeWitt Township approved a 425 tax-sharing agreement on the property, designating approximately 850 acres (344 ha) of land as available for future development.

Leonard Skinner, namesake of rock group Lynyrd Skynyrd, dies at age 77

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by on 17-07-2018

Monday, September 20, 2010

Leonard Skinner, the namesake of rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd, has died at the age of 77. Skinner was a gym teacher and basketball coach and taught members of the group. His death was announced by his son, also named Leonard Skinner, who also said that he was suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.

Skinner died at the St. Catherine Laboure Manor nursing home in Riverside at 02.30 a.m. His son said that he had a bowl of ice cream shortly after midnight. He had been at the home for about a year.

The coach taught the members of the group in the 1960s and was reportedly hard on the students. He later said in a 2009 interview that “he was just following the rules”. He disputed the rumours that he was extra tough on them or that he kicked them out of school.

In later years he opened up his own bar and became friends with some members of the group and even introduced them at one of their concerts in Jacksonville.
