Canadian PM visits Hamilton, admits he’s an avid curling fan

Wednesday, March 7, 2007

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper made a visit to Hamilton yesterday to watch the 2007 annual Tim Hortons Brier at the Copps Coliseum.

Harper, who is currently writing a book about the history of Hockey, admitted he’s a curling fan. He started to be a fan of curling in Winnipeg Manitoba 10 years ago and said his father used to play it.

“I’ve never curled but my father did when I was very young,” he said. “I’ve followed the Brier for years. About the last decade or so I’ve made an effort to get to the Brier when I could. It is such a great Canadian tradition.”

He cheered on for Alberta’s Kevin Martin. Martin won 9–8 over players from Nova Scotia. Harper met with Kevin Martin after the event. Martin handed the PM his jersey from Monday’s game.

“I’ve obviously got a soft spot for Kevin Martin and Alberta because he’s had such a great career,” said Harper. “But what’s so great about the Brier is whoever wins is not like your normal pro athlete. They’re usually great community people and Canadians. It’s always easy to identify with whoever goes forward.”

Robin MacPherson of Hamilton sat in front of him. She wore a large crown and was draped in gold.

She got to meet the PM and was quoted saying: “Not a lot of people get to meet a prime minister.”

The Hungry Market, The Niche Market, The Customer Where The Heck Are They?

Filed Under (Supplements) by on 04-07-2018

By Gail Morris

You’ve heard it before and you’ll hear it again. The best money making product today is an information product. Makes sense though. Information sells in the information age.

So how do you find people who are willing to pay for information? What is that hungry niche market?

That’s actually two questions. But you can’t get the answer to the first without knowing the second. According to Wikapedia niche marketing is: the process of finding small but potentially profitable market segments and designing custom-made products for them.

Niche marketing is a process. You find small but potentially profitable segments. Then you design products for them.

A process is not immediate. It’s not overnight. It doesn’t come on the wings of a dove. It is work, it takes time and it is profitable. It is NOT an idea that you have first. It is research first, idea second.

Had I understood that concept when I first started I would not have written one of my e-books. It took me 3 months to write it. I developed a web page and never sold a thing. Do not make that mistake. Learn from mine!

Research for the beginner is a painstaking process. It doesn’t take hours but it does take confidence. You will find your market. There are plenty out there. Don’t get discouraged by a disappointment. It is only a disappointment and not the end of your e-book career.

First you research. Make a list of all of the things that interest you or that is a problem for you or a problem for your Aunt Jane, Uncle Charles or best friend/neighbor. Make a list of all of the things you’d love to know more about. Make that list at least 30 items.

A good rule of thumb is that people will pay for information that will help them make more money (or get out of debt), look/feel better (from a problem they already have) or help to solve any other problem they already have. The trend here is that the person already has a problem and they need to solve it.

People are not likely to pay for information that will prevent a problem. I heard one Internet Marketer say that only 20% of people will pay to prevent a problem. Go after the other 80% – it’s much more profitable.

There are great search tools on the Internet to find a target market and determine if people are paying. Start at Amazon and click under books. Search the NY Times Best Seller lists for topics that may interest you. These topics already interest John. Q. Public.

Then take your list of 30 or so topics you develop and go to http://www.inventory.overture.com. Input search words about those topics. This tool will tell you how many people used that keyword in the past month on Yahoo! You can then multiply that number by 2.5 to 3 to get the actual search number across Yahoo! and Google (the two biggest engines).

Once you have a topic that is returning numbers between 750-1000 on the Overture tool you will look down the list of other keywords that Overture returns. If some of the top topics include the word ‘fr*e’ – such as ‘fr*e crochet patterns’ then people are most likely not paying for this information. Move on.

Narrow your field to three topics that you can either write about with a bit of research or about which you want to learn more. Then head off to Google and search for those topics. Check out your competition. What are they selling? Are they selling or giving away the information?

You can also check out the number of products people are paying for at PayPal. Go to the bottom of the page and click on shops. Search for similar products to the e-book you want to produce. The number sign after the name of the product is the number sold through PayPal since the owner of that product started taking Paypal.

Can you produce a product that is better, answers more questions and gives a different solution? That is your niche!

Very important: Know what questions your market is asking.

Go to Yahoo! and search in the Groups category for people who need your information. Find out what questions they are asking. Visit forums in your target market or use a flycatcher page.

Produce a product that answers those questions and you won’t be selling – they will be buying what they asked for!

Wikimania 2008: MediaWiki use in the U.S. Department of State

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by on 04-07-2018

This article mentions the Wikimedia Foundation, one of its projects, or people related to it. Wikinews is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation.

Sunday, July 20, 2008

The last day of the Wikimania 2008 conference saw Saturday morning sessions on a variety of topics. Wikinews attended a presentation by Eric M. Johnson from the United States Department of State. Eric, a former NCO in the U.S. Marines, is the lead for the Knowledge Management Action team in the department’s Office of eDiplomacy, and involved in department’s use of Web 2.0 technologies for knowledge management. This includes blogs, and the key focus of his talk, Wiki culture in the U.S. Department of State.

Eric opened his presentation with an introduction to the U.S. State Department, one of the oldest agencies of the American government, which today has around 57,000 employees worldwide. When formed in the 18th century their offices and diplomatic staff operated largely autonomously due to lack of ability to communicate rapidly. By the mid-20th century this had changed with the advent of telegraph lines, and changed again with the Cold War and security concerns bringing to the fore the well-known term, “need to know”.

Now, in the 21st century, the volume of internal communication generated by the department is a staggering 1,800,000 cables a year, 1.5 billion emails, production of around 500,000 print volumes, and maintenance of approximately one thousand websites. Both internal and externally facing.

A pilot project was set up, Diplopedia, a MediaWiki wiki running on the department’s internal network, which outside of the department of defence is one of the largest private networks operated by the U.S. government.

A grassroots effort, this project to promote knowledge sharing differs from the well-known Wikipedia in that it does not allow anonymous edits. There are around 1,000 registered users who have contributed over 4,400 pages. Integration with the Department of State’s internal search engine prioritises results from the wiki, increasing the popularity of the site such that it has received over 650,000 page views. Like Wikipedia, users are required to provide sources for entered information at the foot of the article, and users are warned that it is a starting point and not an authoritative source of information. Data on visa requirements and information from other static department sites has been incorporated into the wiki.

Eric described the project as just reaching critical mass and attracting increasing interest from other departments. Among the ingredients leading to the success of the project were the cultural change with increasing awareness of the technology from Wikipedia, the formation by the community of a welcoming committee, and the taking on of roles to carry out tasks such as drafting. A number of staff act as “gardeners” tending to the wiki content, keeping it fresh, and well cross-referenced. The continual updating is a novel concept to many of their employees.

Unlike Wikipedia, and many other projects using MediaWiki, none of the Diplopedia pages are locked or protected. This even includes their main page. To date there have been none of the content disputes that have been an issue on Wikipedia, and the use of the wiki to replace traditional websites which are far more time consuming to maintain is seen as a logical extension of the project.

Carried out with no outside help, and by learning from others’ mistakes, the department has adopted mechanisms for assuming that contributions are well-intentioned, and has a body for oversight in the event of a dispute.

With the success of the project, eDiplomacy plans to introduce a separate, classified wiki. They will also expand the effort to compile biographies of foreign leaders, which was pioneered by the U.S. missions in Italy and Germany. This effort has proven valuable when combined with a version of the site available on portable devices such as the Blackberry.

The future holds moves to seek more support from management and integration with their primary authentication system. Among the features on the main page to keep the project interesting to staff is a “Diploquiz” which poses a weekly trivia question which can be answered from somewhere within the wiki.

Afghanistan: Suicide attackers kill several people in Kabul

A car bomb attack this morning, which targeted a NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) convoy in Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, has killed or wounded dozens of people. The death toll was not confirmed, and estimates range from ten to twenty deaths. 47 people were injured in the attack.

The incident occurred at the Darulaman crossroads, near a US-Afghan military base and the parliament. Six NATO troops died in the attack alongside several civilians. The NATO said they had sealed off the region. The bomber had been driving a car filled with explosives, which they detonated at around 0815 local time [0415 GMT].

Iain Baxter, a spokesman for Isaf (International Security Assistance Force), stated: “An Isaf convoy was hit. At the moment we’re trying to confirm the number of Isaf casualties.” He could not confirm the number of Isaf personnel killed in the attack.

Zemarai Bashary, an Interior Ministry spokesperson, confirmed the attack, noting that “[t]here are a number of casualties, civilians killed and wounded.” The death toll is unclear, and we’re checking all the hospitals,” he added.

Hamid Karzai, President of Afghanistan, said it was a “heartbreaking” attack. “We are condemning the attack in the strongest terms. I hope Afghanistan will soon get out of this suffering, God willing,” he commented on national television.

General Ahmad Zia Yaftali, the chief military doctor of the Afghan army, claimed twenty people had been killed. “We have five bodies brought to our hospital so far […] the number of the dead is more than 20,” Yaftali told Agence France-Presse news agency.

Later, the Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, saying a resident of Kabul, Nizamuddin, had been sent to “destroy five foreign vehicles and damage one more.” “Today’s attack was part of the Al Fatah operation and we will continue attacking foreigners and government security forces and their associates,” Zabihullah Mujahid, a Taliban spokesperson said. The latter had 1,500 pounds of explosives in his Toyota van. NATO officials said five US military convoys were destroyed along with a further thirteen public vehicles. One of the vehicles to be destroyed was a bus filled with people.

Drug-resistant infections on the rise in American hospitals

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by on 04-07-2018

April 9, 2005

A rise in flesh-eating staph infections has worried doctors about the possible spread of drug resistant bacteria.

Staphylococcus aureus, commonly known as staph, is a bacteria that commonly causes skin infections in otherwise healthy people. However, as a persistent threat in hospitals, it tends to infect patients who are already sick and whose systems are vulnerable due to IV lines that pierce the skin. Doctors have already battled for years against drug-resistant strains of the bacteria, but the struggle has generally been confined to hospitals.

Now, however, Methicillin Resistant Staph Aureus (MRSA) has been spreading in communities outside hospitals. Cases have multiplied by 25 times since 1998 at the University of Chicago. A Los Angeles hospital documented 14 cases of the flesh-eating infection, where patients required substantial time in intensive care and surgery. The infections are particularly problematic because nearly a quarter of people who get a staph infection require hospitalization.

Staph infections are spread much like other diseases, with crowded conditions, poor hygiene, and skin-to-skin contact most frequently to blame. At higher risk are prison inmates, homeless people, military personnel, and families with kids in day care. Athletes also have a higher risk, because sweating makes it easier for bacteria to infect the skin.

Water main bursts in west Edinburgh; traffic, utilities disrupted

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by on 04-07-2018

In Edinburgh, capital of Scotland, part of an underground water piping system has exploded, forcing local residents to be evacuated. The pipe broke around 03:30 BST (0230 UTC) today, within Allan Park Road, causing flooding in the Slateford area of the city.

A spokesperson for Scottish sewerage and water corporation Scottish Water explained: “Early this morning reports were received of flooding in Allan Park Road and Scottish Water operatives attended the scene. A large diameter water main had burst. The water was shut off and re-routed via other pipes to keep supplies flowing to households in the area. Repairs are under way and the customers affected by the flooding are being offered assistance.”

Stating that repairs to resolve this problem had commenced and would take a few hours to conclude, Lothian and Borders Police have advised that the floods may disrupt the supplies of water and other utilities, as well as transportation on roads and railways in the west of Edinburgh. Hospitals and rest homes in the region have been notified of the incident and bottled water is now anticipated to be supplied at these buildings.

According to local residents, Slateford Road (A70), a major throughway, was closed for several hours this morning. Telephony and broadband in the area is disrupted, with local residents and businesses having to rely on cellphones. Further work, such as digging up the road and using temporary traffic lights, will be required to restore these services in the area.

As of 13:15 BST (1215 UTC), Scottish Water has excavated around the burst main, but has not yet begun work on replacing the damaged section of pipe.
