On October 14, 2008, Canadians will be heading to the polls for the federal election. New Democratic Party incumbent David Christopherson is standing for re-election in the riding of Hamilton Centre.

From 1985-1990, he served as a Hamilton City Councillor for Ward Four. He was elected to Ontario legislature in 1990, defeating a Liberal cabinet minister. Under Bob Rae, Christopherson served as Minister of Correctional Services and Solicitor-General. He did not seek re-election to legislature in 2003, opting to run for mayor of Hamilton. Considered a frontrunner, he lost to Larry Di Ianni.

He returned to politics just months later, changing his focus to federal politics. Christopherson beat Liberal cabinet minister Stan Keyes, the incumbent, serving as NDP critic for cities, community infrastructure, labour and steel policy. He has served as a member of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Public Accounts, and Deputy Chair of the Parliamentary Steel Caucus.

Wikinews contacted David Christopherson, to talk about the issues facing Canadians, and what they and their party would do to address them. Wikinews is in the process of contacting every candidate, in every riding across the country, no matter their political stripe. All interviews are conducted over e-mail, and interviews are published unedited, allowing candidates to impart their full message to our readers, uninterrupted.

First elected in 2004, David Christopherson is the only MP to have represented Hamilton Centre, which was created in 2003 from parts of three other ridings. Only 38 km², small versus other area ridings, its located on the south side of Hamilton Harbour. Alphabetically, Christopherson’s challengers are Anthony Giles (Libertarian), John Livingstone (Green), Lisa Nussey (Marxist-Leninist), Leon O’Connor (Conservative), Ryan Sparrow (Communist), and Helen M. Wilson (Liberal).

PayPal receives banking licence

The online payment service PayPal has received a banking licence in Luxembourg, promoting it to the status of a bank. As a consequence PayPal will move their headquarters to Luxembourg.

Since 2004 PayPal had the status of an Electronic Money Issuer supervised by the U.K. Financial Services Authority. Having an official bank status opens new prospects for the company: “This will allow us to actively scout retailers in different European countries. With our British licence, we could only do that in the U.K. itself, and in other countries we could only react to requests of the retailers themselves,” Christopher Coonen, General Manager of PayPal Southern Europe and Benelux, explained.

The change will not affect existing customers dramatically, says Coonen: “We are going to inform them of the new status, and they will have to accept our terms of service again.” He also said that for now, there were no plans to use the new licence to offer traditional banking services, but the possibility was being evaluated by PayPal. Working with local partners would be an option to accomplish this, according to Coonen.

The British newspaper The Daily Telegraph speculates that the move is part of a strategy to compete with Google’s payment service Google Checkout, which launched in the U.K. last month.

PayPal has 130 million users worldwide, and 35 million customers in Europe. Payments via its mother company eBay continue to make up 60% of PayPal’s revenues. More than half of Britain’s internet users have a PayPal account.

Amnesty report’s criticisms rejected by Bush administration

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by on 06-05-2018

Sunday, June 5, 2005

Irene Khan, Secretary General of Amnesty International, compared the United States detention facility at Guantanamo Bay to a Soviet-era gulag in that it is “entrenching the practice of arbitrary and indefinite detention in violation of international law,” she said.

The group’s Executive Director William Schulz, on Fox News Sunday, said in response to questioning that they do not “know for sure” whether or not testimonies it has published describing torture and abuse of prisoners by sections of the U.S. military are valid because the U.S. will not give access to the camp to investigate them. [1]

He also said he has no conclusive evidence that U.S. Secretary of Defense, Donald Rumsfeld, ordered torture of detainees at the facility. Schulz had previously referred to “apparent high-level architects of torture,”, and included Donald Rumsfeld in that group. [2]

Director Schulz stated that comparing the installation to a gulag was perhaps not the best choice of words. “…they (detainees) are not in forced labor, they are not being denied food. But,” he continued,” there are some analogies between the gulags and our detention facilities.” Schulz alleged that U.S. officials are “running an archipelago of detention facilities,” some secret. The report also describes “ghost” detainees who “disappear” and the export of prisoners to countries that are known to practice torture.

During his appearance, Schulz argued that his and other human rights groups should be given broader access to the facility. “We don’t know for sure what all is happening at Guantanamo,” he said, “and our whole point is that the United States ought to allow independent human rights organizations to investigate.” The treatment of prisoners at the facility has been in hot dispute recently, with Amnesty International comparing the facility to a “gulag” in its annual human rights report. Bush administration officials condemned the comparison.

On Friday, the U.S. government released documents indicating that both guards and detainees at the facility had on a few occasions abused the Qur’an, the Muslim holy book.

Prisoners and ex-prisoners at Guantanamo Bay have testified that they have been tortured. David Hicks, still being held, filed an affidavit on August 5, 2004 [3] declaring that he had been tortured, abused and ill-treated during his detention by US military authorities, and that he saw and heard similar treatment inflicted on other detainees. Mamdouh Habib, now free, says about his time at Guantanamo Bay that he was told by interrogators that his family had been killed, and that he was tied to the ground while a prostitute menstruated on him. Professor Christopher Tennant of Sydney University also stated he saw an unsigned medical report from Guantanamo Bay that backed up Habib’s claim to have been beaten while in US custody;

“Well, the main feature of the medical report from Guantanamo was that he had had repeatedly blood in his urine, which is a very significant symptom and a worrying symptom, and that was consistent with his reports both to me and to the specialist physician who also examined him, and was consistent with the fact that, on examination, he had evidence of discolouration to his skin on his right loin, just over his kidney, which in turn was consistent with old bruising and possibly due to being beaten.”

What Does a Mom Do About Teeth

by

Bebe Ordway

Dentists become very important when you are a Mom. A Mom is responsible for the health and well being of her children. One of those health issues is the care of your child\’s teeth. It is important to involve dentists early in children\’s lives. When my oldest child was just two years old, I could tell that there was something going on with his front baby teeth. Once I saw the problem, I was all about finding dentists to get dental services for him. I began searching for dentists in our area. The Payson dentist I found, took great care of my child. He was also a big support to me, as I found out that the cause of my son\’s problems was bottle mouth.

Although the Payson dentists are not specifically Pediatric dentists, I was able to trust them fully with the work on my son\’s oral care. General dentistry care takers work on the whole family, regardless of age. This was nice, as I could go to just one place for all of our dental treatment. The dental services we received from the dentists, for our son was a relief. They gave us support and understanding as they went to work to take care of what is considered a preventable dental health issue. You might expect dentists to lecture you, but they didn\’t.

I felt guilty and upset at myself for allowing my son to drink a bottle of milk to go to sleep at night. I guess I had known that from dentists in the past, however, as a tired Mom, I just got in the bad habit of doing what worked. The dentists at my Payson Dentist office were so nice about it though. They went to work for the treatment and care of the teeth, then gave me support and instruction for oral care in the future, non-judgmental instructions, just facts that I needed to be reminded of from professional dentists.

As a Mom, you never want to be responsible for causing a health concern for your child. To be told by the dentists that the issue could have been preventable is nothing short of humbling. Now I am adamant about getting my Children into the dentists for their regular dental health care visits. We go to those same dentists that helped me with my son. I support healthy eating, and foods that work to support dental health. I never want it said of me again, that I was the cause or the lack of my general care was the cause of any dentistry issue, like a root canal, or some other dental health issue. I want to be able to look my dentists in the eye and say, \”I am doing my best.\”

I now take my children for regular general check-ups, every six months, just as the dentists have recommended. We work to take care of our teeth at home, as well. We brush our teeth morning and night, and floss everyday. I now know that dental services are a big support for this home regiment.

My Payson Dentists attended accredited dental schools and are members of the American Dental Association. This helps me have confidence in the dentists ability to provide health services for all the work on my family\’s teeth. My initial search for dentists has really paid off. I count on them for all of the oral care and dental health in our lives. If I ever need a root canal or wish to have cosmetic dentistry done, I can be assured that these dentists, Payson dentists, can care for my needs without judgement. They only care that they provide the best dental care and dental services that they possibly can. They are in the business of making smiles and they sure gave me reason s to grin.

As a Mom, you never want to be responsible for causing a health concern for your child. To be told by the dentists that the issue could have been preventable is nothing…. Learn more at

Preparations for inaugural Bathurst International Motor Festival begin

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by on 06-05-2018

Wednesday, February 22, 2006

The Bathurst Regional Council has begun preparing the Mount Panorama motor racing circuit for the inaugural Bathurst International Motorsport Festival (BIMF) to be held between April 13 and 16, 2006. The Mount Panorama motor racing circuit is considered to be the home of motorsport in Australia.

Council’s staff have been busy cleaning the facilities, erecting signage, checking pedestrian bridges and inspecting the track surface for the past few days.

The BIMF will be the first event to be held at the 6.2 kilometre circuit over Easter since 2000. In 2000, Event Management Specialists held the first motorcycle racing event since 1990, but due to EMS going bankrupt a short time after their 2000 event was ran and the inability of the then Bathurst City Council to find another promoter, the Easter event was canned.

The BIMF is inspired by the Festival of Speed and Goodwood Revival in the United Kingdom. The Bathurst Regional Council and event promoter Global Entertainment Team promise that the event “will cater for all motoring enthusiasts, collectors and historians”.

According to the BIMF website, the on-track program consists of:

 • Manufacturers showcasing their vehicles and track times
 • Historic touring car races
 • Aussie racing car races
 • Australian GT sports car
 • Parade laps by car clubs
 • Parade laps and races by “Legends of Motorsport”
 • Stunt car and bike events
 • Rally cars
 • Displays of cars from all eras of Mount Panorama’s history
 • The chance for patrons to purchase a ride around the circuit in a race car.

Off the track, the organisers have promised manufacturer displays, merchandise stands, music, joyflights, Off-road demonstrations and joyrides, autograph sessions and interviews with influential people in the Australian motor industry.

2008 Taipei International Book Exhibition: Varied features at Kid Book Hall

Friday, February 15, 2008

Following the first day’s events at the 2008 Taipei International Book Exhibition (TIBE), organisers used today as an opportunity for a number of autograph sessions, the announcement of awards and a focus on the Taipei World Trade Center‘s Hall 3 where children’s activities and seminars were being held.

The Kids’ Book Hall, which was created with cooperation from the Regional Association of Educational Materials, saw a new addition this year in the form of the “Taiwan Stationery” pavilion. The display included a variety of paper products not only for children, but for small-business and general usage.

In order to promote some conceptions on environment and recycling, Yuen Foong Yu Paper Mfg. Co. Ltd. sponsored the exhibition with recycled poster container and corrugated-fiberboard, which was used to design several nature scenes, and the material will be reusable in the future.

Participants also held several seminars at TWTC Hall 1 for reading population promotion, for example, a Taiwanese version of a famous magazine named “Kagakuru”. Aimed at science education, imported by Taiwan Mac Education, and promoted by several academic professionals in Taiwan, the magazine will be released on March 3, 2008.

Ensure Water And Sewer Flow Properly With Help From Plumbing Contractors In Azle, Tx

Filed Under (Pipes) by on 06-05-2018

byAlma Abell

There are many things that make a building a home, but the plumbing is one of the most important. This is because the plumbing in your home supplies fresh, potable water while eliminating some of the waste people produce. Plumbing can also include the installation and repair of gas lines, water heaters, filtration systems, and the connection of certain appliances, such as washing machines, or the water supply lines for refrigerators. However, one of the most common reasons for contacting Plumbing Contractors in Azle TX, is a water leak.

Surprisingly, not all water leaks are visible or even easily noticed. Water leaks occur because water in your plumbing is under pressure. Over time, this pressure may cause tiny cracks in either the material the pipes are made from or whatever seals the joints together. The cracks can happen from the expansion and contraction of the pipes during daily use or through temperature variations. In most homes, there will rarely be any problems, but sometimes these leaks will occur in the walls, under floors, or in other inaccessible locations. Plumbing Contractors in Azle TX, can find the source of these leaks using acoustical tools that measure variances of the sounds within the walls.

The second most common reason to call a plumber is a clogged drain line. Clogs occur when something blocks the flow of effluent and waste matter. They typically occur in either the pipe traps or the main sewer lines. The pipe traps are designed to keep sewer gas from entering the home. They work by capturing a little water in a curved area of the outflow pipes. Unfortunately, they can also capture food particles, hair, and other gunk. These clogs are generally easy to fix, but problems in the main lines can be another matter.

The main sewer lines are fairly large pipes that aren’t under constant pressure. This means any debris in the sewer pipes can accumulate and, eventually, block the flow from your home. To remedy the clog, a plumber will need to use a pipe snake and push through the problem. They usually access the sewer pipe from an external vent or by removing the toilet closest to the sewer line. If your home has a need for experienced Plumbing Contractors in Azle TX, be sure and contact Ace Repair Plumbing.
