Journalist, counselor, painter, and US 2012 Presidential candidate Joe Schriner of Cleveland, Ohio took some time to discuss his campaign with Wikinews in an interview.

Schriner previously ran for president in 2000, 2004, and 2008, but failed to gain much traction in the races. He announced his candidacy for the 2012 race immediately following the 2008 election. Schriner refers to himself as the “Average Joe” candidate, and advocates a pro-life and pro-environmentalist platform. He has been the subject of numerous newspaper articles, and has published public policy papers exploring solutions to American issues.

Wikinews reporter William Saturn? talks with Schriner and discusses his campaign.

Polaroid goes bankrupt

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by on 25-04-2018

Friday, December 19, 2008

Camera company Polaroid has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the United States. The firm, famed for the introduction of instant photography, says alleged fraud by the founder of their parent group is to blame.

Owned since 2005 by Petters Group Worldwide, Polaroid says that the group’s founder Tom Petters is “under investigation for alleged acts of fraud that have compromised the financial condition of Polaroid.” Authorities believe Petter, currently in police custody, was running fraud worth £3 billion, something he denies.

Petters Group, itself, filed for bankruptcy in October. Both firms now face restructuring, which Polaroid is confident won’t affect daily operations — in fact, the company is “planning for new product launches in 2009,” and claims to have “entered bankruptcy with ample cash reserves sufficient to finance the company’s reorganization under Chapter 11.”

Polaroid has further said that employees will be paid without interruption, and that while members of Petters Group are under investigation for fraud, Polaroid’s management is not. The company, based in Minnesota, also has subsidiaries which will enter bankruptcy with it.

Experts: obesity is a bigger threat than AIDS or bird flu

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by on 25-04-2018

Friday, September 8, 2006

From September 3 to 8, experts gathered at the 10th International Congress on Obesity in Sydney, Australia, to discuss what they call the worldwide “obesity epidemic”. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 1 billion people in the world today are overweight, and 300 million of those are obese. “Obesity and overweight pose a major risk for serious diet-related chronic diseases, including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension and stroke, and certain forms of cancer“, a WHO fact sheet states. According to AP, experts at the conference “have warned that obesity is a bigger threat than AIDS or bird flu, and will easily overwhelm the world’s health care systems if urgent action is not taken”.

Of particular concern is the large number of overweight children. Dr. Stephan Rossner from Sweden’s Karolinska University Hospital, a leading obesity expert who was present at the conference, has warned that as a result of the increasing number of overweight children, “we will have, within a decade or two, a number of young people who are on kidney dialysis. There will not be organs for everybody”. UK-based International Obesity Task Force has said that junk food manufacturers target children, for example, through Internet advertising, chat rooms, text messages, and “advergames” on websites. Politicians are not doing enough to address the problem of obesity, including childhood obesity, the experts said.

According to Wikipedia, examples of junk food include, but are not limited to: hamburgers, pizza, candy, soda, and salty foods like potato chips and french fries. A well-known piece of junk food is the Big Mac. The US version of just one Big Mac burger contains 48% of calories from fat, 47% US Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) of fat, 52% RDA of saturated fat, 26% RDA of cholesterol, 42% RDA of sodium, and little nutritional value. It also has 18% of calories from protein. According to WHO, most people need only about 5% calories from protein. Staples such as rice, corn, baked potatoes, pinto beans, as well as fruits and vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, zucchini, oranges, and strawberries, provide more than this required amount of protein without the unhealthy amounts of fats or sodium, without cholesterol, and with plenty of fiber, vitamins, and minerals.

Both WHO and the American Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) define overweight in adults as a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 25 or above, and obese as a BMI of 30 or above. To combat overweight and obesity, WHO recommends that, among other things, people should be taking the following steps

 • eating more fruit and vegetables, as well as nuts and whole grains;
 • engaging in daily moderate physical activity for at least 30 minutes;
 • cutting the amount of fatty, sugary foods in the diet;
 • moving from saturated animal-based fats to unsaturated vegetable-oil based fats.

What Does My Toothache Mean?

Filed Under (Health) by on 24-04-2018

bytimothyharvard

Tooth pain is one of the most excruciating types of pain you can experience, as your teeth naturally have high sensitivity to painful stimuli. A toothache is a sign of a serious oral health issue that needs addressed immediately. When you are suffering from tooth pain, you may be experiencing one of several common health issues.

Health Problems

Tooth decay is usually the chief cause of tooth pain. Tooth decay can be the result of not brushing your teeth or flossing regularly as well as not getting an adequate amount of fluoride or eating high-sugar foods. A warning sign that you might have tooth decay is that you feel pain after eating something very hot, very cold or sweet. However, a toothache may have other causes, including gum disease, infection or bruxism, more commonly known as the grinding of the teeth. A bite that is abnormal or tooth trauma can also cause tooth pain.

Toothache Symptoms

Toothaches feature several symptoms that require the attention of a dentist. These symptoms may include fever or pain upon biting. You may also experience difficulty with swallowing or breathing, or the painful tooth might have swelling around it. If you suffer from pain when biting, or experience pain that doesn’t seem to subside, you need to see a dentist as well. Some people notice a discharge in their mouths that is foul-tasting; this discharge is pus, and if it’s located near your pain’s source, your tooth might have an abscess. This is dangerous because the pus can cause the bone surrounding your tooth to be infected or may be a sign of gum disease.

Dental Care

When you see your dentist, he or she will complete a comprehensive oral examination in order to pinpoint the cause and location of your toothache. Farmington Hills dentists will look for obvious damage to your teeth, as well as redness and swelling of the gums. Your dentist will also have x-rays taken to determine if you have an impacted or cracked tooth or tooth decay between your teeth. The bone supporting your teeth may also have a disorder, which can be detected through dental x-rays. With the help of a qualified dentist, you can quickly tackle your tooth problem and get the relief you need as soon as possible.

Dwoskin & Owens Cosmetic & Family Dentistry can efficiently diagnose and treat the cause of your tooth pain. To find out more about this dental care provider’s services, visit Myperfectsmiledds.com.

Different Wedding Invitations}

Filed Under (Arts And Crafts) by on 24-04-2018

Your wedding theme is an important part of basically everything that you will be doing at your celebration. The theme really ties everything together and sort of dictates a lot of your decorations, foods, and colors that you will be using. You need to make sure that everything is part of your theme and that can be a lot of work for you, and sometimes you will feel overwhelmed. With all of this going on it can be really difficult to remember everything that you need to do and sometimes you might get a little bit mixed up and that is understandable but you still need to be on top of your game.

One of the first things that you have to do is figure out your invitations because those go out way before the wedding is even about to come up. However, your invitations are still really important because they are the first things that your guests will see and the invitations will set the mood for the night that is up and coming. So, when you send out your wedding invitations you really need to think about all of this and how you will incorporate it into your invites. Your guests will really like to get this little sneak peek into the decorations and style for your celebration so that they can get ready for it and plan to maybe match your theme or buy you something that can be incorporated into it. Here are just a couple examples of the types of things you can find by shopping online.

Rose Embossed Invites:

These are really elegant invitations that promote traditional themes and the look of a perfect bride. Flowers are a symbol of eternity. Your wedding bond is supposed to be an eternal spiritual bond between you and your new spouse so the flowers are a great symbol of that bond that you have just formed. Also, if you are having a summer or a flower theme then these will really go great because your guests will already see those kinds of decorations forming in their imagination and they will expect to see that at your celebration. These are really just great and they will impress your guests because they will see that you have great style and that you put a lot of work into planning your party.

Bachelorette Part Invites:

Okay, so this isn’t for your wedding, but it is a very important part of the wedding process. Your bridal shower is a time for you to just let loose and relax. Traditionally, your bridesmaids plan this event for you, but maybe you want to have a little bit to do with it like picking the date or the invitations. These invites are perfect because they reflect the fun and vibrant atmosphere that a bridal shower should have. The front features fun colors and the image of a classy looking woman. The design of these cards is just really fashionable and all of your friends will love getting one in the mail.

New Jersey files lawsuit against federal sports betting ban

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by on 24-04-2018

Wednesday, March 25, 2009

A New Jersey state senator has filed a lawsuit seeking to overturn a federal law banning sports betting in 46 states.

State Sen. Raymond Lesniak, a Democrat representing portions of Union County, filed the suit Monday, arguing the 17-year-old law is unconstitutional because it treats four states differently than the other states.

Under the law, sports betting is prohibited in all states except Delaware, Oregon, Montana and Nevada, although only the latter two currently allow wagering.

“This federal law deprives the State of New Jersey of over $100 million of yearly revenues, as well as depriving our casinos, racetracks and Internet operators of over $500 million in gross income,” Lesniak said in a statement to the press.

The 39-page lawsuit is believed to be the first challenge to the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992. New Jersey missed a 1994 deadline that would have allowed it to join the other states when the law was implemented.

Atlantic City officials and their political allies have argued allowing sports betting would give all the states a new source of revenue needed in the face of a staggering recession.

New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine was not involved with the lawsuit, but he said legalizing sports betting would help Atlantic City and said it was “worth pursuing”.

Legalizing sports betting in New Jersey could bring the state more than $50 million in annual tax revenue, according to officials from the Interactive Media Entertainment & Gaming Inc., a Washington, D.C.-based consultant for the electronic gaming industry, which joined Lesniak as a plaintiff in the lawsuit.

“This is about more than revenue,” said Joe Brennan Jr., chairman of Interactive Media Entertainment. “It’s about jobs and economic activity.”According to 1999 study, $380 billion in illegal sports betting occurs in the state each year.

New Jersey, in particular, is facing a difficult budget season, and the Atlantic City casinos are in what the Associated Press called a “financial meltdown”. Eleven of the city’s casinos suffered their biggest revenue decline in 30 years last month.

Delaware is reported to be considering regulating sports betting, which New Jersey backers of the lawsuit said adds a sense of urgency to the issue.

“We cannot afford to be naive about illegal sports betting,” New Jersey State Sen. Jeff Van Drew said in a statement to the press. “It’s happening right now, and is funding other criminal enterprises which are far more dangerous.”

The New Jersey Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association, the Thoroughbred Breeders Association of New Jersey and the Standardbred Breeders & Owners Association of New Jersey were also listed as plaintiffs in the lawsuit.

How Portable Self Storage Can Be Moving Self Storage?

Filed Under (Kitchen Home Improvement) by on 24-04-2018

By Jason Kay

If you are getting ready to move you are no doubt under some stress, but you can make your life a lot easier and let portable self storage become your moving self storage. Unlike traditional ways of moving, when you rent a portable self storage container it can serve as a welcomed substitution to the whole ordeal of renting a moving truck.

By looking at portable storage as moving self storage you can cut out renting a truck, trying to figure out if you need that extra insurance, and then picking up and dropping off the truck. Forget also about getting the truck back by six o’clock and being sure that you have swept out the back and filled the gas tank. You can also forgo the whole ordeal of begging 20 of your friends to show up on a weekend to help you load and unload the truck and then be disappointed when only your two closest friends make the effort.

Portable self storage containers are the perfect solution because you can have the portable self storage company drop off the container in your driveway as far in advance of your move as you would like. This allows you to load up your things at your leisure and when your moving self storage container is full, you simply call the portable storage company and have them pick up the container and deliver it to your new home.

If you are not going to be ready for your things for a while that is no problem. You can have all of your things stored in a climate controlled warehouse facility that is owned by the portable storage company and there your moving storage unit will sit safe from the elements until you are ready for it. Take a week, take a month, you pay for the time it is stored.

Once you are ready for your stuff to be delivered to your new home then one call is all it takes and before you know it your things will be in your driveway. Now instead of rushing to unload a moving truck so you have time to get it back to the rental company, you can take a day or a month to unload your things and never feel one bit of pressure to get the job done as fast as you can.

Once your moving storage unit is empty then simply call the company to come pick it back up and they will take it away for you in a timely manner. Really there is no better or easier way to move these days.

With the ease of using a portable storage container as your moving storage unit, it seems silly to put yourself through the pains that typically come with moving. Face it, you are going to be stressed out enough with the move so why not cut out a big part of that stress and find a reliable and affordable portable storage company that can help you move at your own pace.

Shimon Peres discusses the future of Israel

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by on 24-04-2018

Wednesday, January 9, 2008

This year Israel turns sixty and it has embarked upon a campaign to celebrate its birthday. Along with technology writers for Slate, PC Magazine, USA Today, BusinessWeek, Aviation Weekly, Wikinews was invited by the America-Israel Friendship League and the Israeli Foreign Ministry to review Israel’s technology sector. It’s part of an effort to ‘re-brand the country’ to show America that there is more to Israel than the Palestinian conflict. On this trip we saw the people who gave us the Pentium processor and Instant Messaging. The schedule was hectic: 12-14 hours a day were spent doing everything from trips to the Weizmann Institute to dinner with Yossi Vardi.

On Thursday, the fifth day of the junket, David Saranga of the foreign ministry was able to arrange an exclusive interview for David Shankbone with the President of Israel, Nobel Peace Prize recipient Shimon Peres. For over an hour they spoke about Iranian politics, whether Israel is in danger of being side-lined in Middle Eastern importance because of Arab oil wealth, and his thoughts against those who say Israeli culture is in a state of decay.

The only crime I committed was to be a little bit ahead of time. And if this is the reason for being controversial, maybe the reason is better than the result.

Shimon Peres spent his early days on kibbutz, a bygone socialist era of Israel. In 1953, at the age of 29, Peres became the youngest ever Director General of the Ministry of Defense. Forty years later it was Peres who secretly gave the green light for dialogue with Yassir Arafat, of the verboten Palestine Liberation Organization. It was still official Israeli policy to not speak with the PLO. Peres shares a Nobel Peace Prize with Yitzak Rabin and Arafat for orchestrating what eventually became the Oslo Accords. The “roadmap” that came out of Oslo remains the official Israeli (and American) policy for peace in the Palestinian conflict. Although the majority of Israeli people supported the plans, land for peace was met with a small but fiery resistance in Israel. For negotiating with Arafat, former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu shouted at Peres, “You are worse than Chamberlain!” a reference to Hitler’s British appeaser. It was during this time of heated exchanges in the 1990s that Yitzhak Rabin was assassinated by Yigal Amir, a Jew who thought it against Halakhic law to give up land given by God (Hashem).

Peres is the elder statesman of Israeli politics, but he remembers that he has not always been as popular as he is today. “Popularity is like perfume: nice to smell, dangerous to drink,” said Peres. “You don’t drink it.” The search for popularity, he goes on to say, will kill a person who has an idea against the status quo.

US stocks slump as crude oil surges, gold hits 25 yr high

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by on 24-04-2018

Friday, January 20, 2006

US stocks suffered their biggest declines in more than two years on concerns about oil supplies from Iran and Nigeria. Crude oil prices jumped to more than $68 a barrel, levels not seen since September last year. Gold hit a 25 year peak and last traded at $553.50 an ounce.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) slumped 213+ points today amid fears of Iran and terrorism. The index has now given up all its gains since the beginning of the year. Among its 30 components, only McDonalds ended the day in positive territory. Disappointing earnings dragged down shares of General Electric Co. and Citigroup Inc.

Since the start of the Q4 earnings season, many analysts have been reducing their earnings expectations. S&P 500 companies are now expected to report a profit growth of 12.7 percent, compared with earlier expectations of 15.5 percent. This analysis was done by Bloomberg using data from Thomson. Earnings growth is expected to slow down to 9.9 percent in the first quarter of this year.

Shares of GE gave up $1.35 to end at $33.33 after the firm reported its smallest earnings gain since 2004. GE is the world’s second largest firm by market value. Q4 earnings rose to 55 cents a share from 54 cents while revenue rose 2.6 percent to $40.7 billion, below analysts’ estimates.

The DJIA was dragged down by Citigroup, largest bank in US. Its stock fell $1.98 to $45.96. The company reported fourth-quarter earnings of $4.97 billion, or 98 cents a share. The earnings were below consensus estimates of $1.
