St. Anthony Foundation provides hope

On the corner of Golden Gate Ave. and Jones St. in the Tenderloin, San Francisco, right next to the Civic Center you can see a throng of low-income and homeless people lining up outside of St. Anthony’s Dining Room hall which opens up it’s doors everyday at 11:30 a.m. Volunteers dressed in St. Anthony Foundation shirts help keep the lines moving as hundreds of homeless and low income people shuffle their way towards the dining hall underneath the watchful eyes of a small statue of St. Francis of Assisi.

“There’s a lot of people who go hungry out here and it ain’t right.” says Jimmy Scott, a slightly brawny 44-year-old black man who has been living homeless in San Francisco for the past three years. “There are families out here with kids and everything and they have to walk around all night just to stay awake so they don’t get hurt or killed…Right here in the U.S. this is going on…it ain’t right.”

The dining hall, which has been open for the past 54 years, is owned by the St. Anthony Foundation which helps low income and homeless people and families in the Civic Center, Tenderloin, and SOMA areas with clothing, shelter, food, drug rehabilitation, and many other services. St. Anthony’s administrative offices are found at 121 Golden Gate Ave. with the majority of the foundation’s buildings on Golden Gate Ave. and Jones St.

“We are right in the heart of the homeless population of San Francisco,” says Barry Stenger, 55, who’s been working for the St. Anthony Foundation for one year, and is the Director of Development and Communications, “and people are pushed here because of the economic forces of San Francisco because it’s hard to be upper middle class in San Francisco.”

According to the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce, “San Francisco’s cost of living remains one of the highest in the country” with the average household income in San Francisco being around $76,400 and the average price of housing being $543,000. Average household income for the United States in 2002, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, was $42,409 and the average price of housing for the United States according to the National Association of Realtors was $185,200 in 2004.

“We served our 32 millionth meal on Tuesday,” said Stenger, “and we serve 2,500 meals a day. Some of our people who work here actually get served [food] here because they spend all their money towards rent and medical costs.”

The St. Anthony Foundation was started by Fr. Alfred Boeddeker in 1950 one year after Fr. Boeddeker became pastor of St. Boniface church on Golden Gate St. where he was baptized as a child. During his lifetime, according to the foundation’s website, he was referred to as the “Patron St. of the Tenderloin” and had Boeddeker park named after him because of his, and his foundation’s, achievements with helping out the homeless and low income community.

“[St. Anthony’s] is a good thing,” said Jimmy Scott, “they provide a good service and they feed people and they clothe them and provide furniture when you get housing and give you groceries when you have AIDS. It’s a good little organization.”

“Our dining room is open 365 days a year.” Said Stenger. “Our other facilities are open seven days a week. We have a residence for senior women and our [free medical] clinic is open five days a week and we also have a furniture and clothing store. We have 12 programs all together.”

Some of those programs are the Father Alfred Center which provides 61 men two programs for getting out of drug and alcohol abuse, the Employment Program/Learning Center which helps participants in educational and employment opportunities and provides each one with a personal staff advisor, and a Senior Outreach and Support Services center which states its mission is to “promote independence, self determination, and alleviate isolation” for seniors who are 60 and older.

A few homeless people who were interviewed complained that St. Anthony’s had some staff who were rude and that they were kicked out of the dining hall; other homeless within the area refuted those claims saying St. Anthony’s has nice staff and only kicks people out who cause trouble.

“It’s a good place and good people. Everybody is so kind and so respectful and everything is under control.” Said John Henderson, a tall and skinny 57-year-old homeless black man who has only been living in San Francisco for close to two months because he recently moved there from Phoenix, Arizona. “It’s pretty cool because they’re under control because yesterday I saw at Glide [Memorial Church which also has services for the poor and low income] and they were handing out food boxes and people were just rushing in and the woman in charge there was freaking out and so she just sat down. That would never happen at St. Anthony’s.”

“And they clean too!” Henderson said laughing with a grin on his face referring to the fact that there are no drugs allowed in the premises. “Not that Glide ain’t clean if you know what I mean.”

“We [also] have a whole division that deals with justice education and advocacy to change the system that brings people to our doorstep.” Said Stenger. “We hear a lot of appreciation from the people we serve. We get a lot of testimony from our clients who have become clean and sober. Sometimes we have to push them a little to get them out the door because they love the [foundation] so much because it has changed their lives.”

Pentagon report reflects concerns over China’s increased military

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by on 31-03-2018

Friday, May 25, 2007

The United States Department of Defense has today released its annual report to the United States Congress called the Military Power of the People’s Republic of China, which assesses the military of the People’s Republic of China. The report documents a steady increase in China’s military budget allowing for increased deployment of resources and technology.

I don’t think it [the report] does any arm-waving, I don’t think it does any exaggeration of the threat. But it paints a picture of a country that is devoting substantial resources to the military and developing, as I say, some very sophisticated capabilities. We wish that there were greater transparency, that they would talk more about what their intentions are, what their strategies are. It would be nice to hear first hand from the Chinese how they view some of these things.

The report details China’s development of five new nuclear ballistic missile submarines (SSBN) called Jin-class submarines that will each be outfitted with 12 5,000-mile-range JL-2 missiles, the 2007 Chinese anti-satellite missile test, vastly improving China’s nuclear missile strike capabilities with a new mobile land-based DF-31A intercontinental ballistic missile that could target the whole United States and a directed deployment of forces that can be used beyond a regional conflict in Taiwan.

If China puts these systems in place effectively on the scale reported in sea-basing and land-basing, it will now have a robust second-strike capability. What was grey before now is becoming clear. China now can effectively fight a nuclear war.

The United States military considers the Chinese build-up a serious threat, with a need for increased preparation in the region.

The U.S. needs to stay well out ahead of any potential adversary so that we are properly prepared, should somebody’s intent change, to deal with that threat when it rises.

The previous 2006 years report stated China’s build-up focused on the political status of Taiwan. China has said it would attack Taiwan if the self-ruled island, which Beijing views as a renegade province, formally declares independence. Now, after years of significant growth in arms spending, China has the ability to project power beyond Taiwan. President Hu Jintao stated on Wednesday his country must build a more modern armed forces to safeguard their national security.

President Hu Jintao probably does not appreciate the effect on the US that his military leaders’ new deployments will have. These Chinese steps only play into the hands of our hardliners and push the US towards worst-case scenarios. The Chinese have an apt proverb: ‘Don’t pick up a rock and drop it on your own feet.’ President Hu needs to cut back this development and head off a cold-war style arms race.

In 2005, Chinese General Zhu Chenghu threatened the United States with nuclear weapons. The comment created concerns of a strategic stance change for China’s weapon’s of mass destruction. Chinese officials later restated the country’s “no first use” policy and have privately played down Zhu’s influence. Some analysts have suggested China’s ballistic missiles could be partly in response to US plans to develop a National Missile Defense system.

There was something to the argument that China was simply responding to US nuclear capabilities. The Chinese were more concerned about US stealth capabilities and cruise missiles and that its naval development was driven more by internal political logic. The Chinese have maintained that they have a ‘no first use’ policy [for nuclear weapons] and that they have a minimal deterrent policy, which means they have only enough nuclear capability to retaliate, but open source journals and discussions and their own modernisation suggest that they are possibly developing capabilities for a more flexible use of nuclear weapons, and survivability and tactical uses that would call into question this declared policy.

Jermaine Pennant jailed for drink-driving

Aylesbury, England – The Arsenal F.C. midfielder Jermaine Pennant, currently on loan to Birmingham City, has today pleaded guilty to drink-driving, driving while disqualified, and driving without insurance by Aylesbury magistrates court. Pennant received a sentence of three months imprisonment. Pennant’s lawyer, Bary Warbutton, has said that the footballer will appeal against the severity of the sentence.

The incident occurred on January 23 of this year, Pennant was arrested after crashing teammate Ashley Cole’s car into a lamppost. The 22-year-old claimed that he crashed the car after attempting to operate the car’s Satellite navigation system.

Despite the claim by Warbutton that imprisonment “could completely destroy his career”, Birmingham City have said that they will stand by the player, and help to rehabilitate him. Arsenal released a statement saying that the sentence would not impact the player’s future with the club; his contract with club expires in the summer, at the same time as his loan-spell with Birmingham ends.

Four Symptoms That Require A Visit To The Vet In Bowie

Filed Under (Pet Treat Manufacturing) by on 30-03-2018

byAlma Abell

All pet owners want what’s best for their animals, but it can be difficult to determine whether an injury or illness is serious enough to head to the veterinarian for care. After all, pets aren’t able to describe their levels of pain and discomfort. That’s why it’s essential for pet owners to keep an eye out for the following symptoms of serious illnesses and injuries and to head to the vet in Bowie as soon as they appear.

Vomiting and Diarrhea

These two non-specific symptoms can be caused by a wide number of underlying problems. One or two instances of vomiting aren’t usually any reason to be concerned but, if the animal has persistent nausea, it can lead to dehydration, so it’s a good idea to seek treatment as soon as possible. Similarly, even comparatively mild cases of diarrhea can lead to dehydration and nutrient loss. Seek treatment quickly to avoid more serious health issues.

Lumps and Bumps

While a few bug bites can usually be treated at home with over-the-counter flea and tick treatments, serious lumps, bumps, and swelling may be signs of fluid buildup, abscesses, parasites, or even cancer. While most lumps are fairly harmless, there is always a chance they may be a symptom of a serious underlying problem. Any persistent unusual bumps should be evaluated by a vet in Bowie to ensure they are not symptoms of any serious health issue.

Changes in Gait

Humans are able to tell their doctors when they are experiencing mobility issues, but pets don’t have that luxury. There are many reasons for limping and changes in gait and they range significantly in severity, but just about all of them require medical attention to avoid long-term lameness.

Appetite Changes

Changes in the amount of food and water that pets consume are often early indicators of systemic diseases. These are most common in older animals but should not be ignored in pets of any age. Pet owners should contact Gambrills Veterinary to schedule an appointment as soon as they notice their animals beginning to eat or drink less than normal, as catching these systemic diseases early often has a substantial impact on treatment outcomes.

Microsoft and Yahoo! link their instant messaging services

Nine months after announcing the interoperability between their instant messaging (IM) services, Internet rivals Microsoft and Yahoo! began limited public beta (pre-release) testing of the program. This enables users of the two services to communicate with each other using their existing IM client, Microsoft’s Windows Live Messenger (formerly MSN Messenger) and Yahoo! Messenger with Voice.

Users wishing to use the new feature can go to a special page on the service’s website, where they have to review and accept an agreement. After signing out and signing in again, the interoperability is enabled without downloading any new software.

The service is designed to allow users to see each others’ online presence, view personal status messages, share select emoticons, view offline messages and add new contacts from either service. However, more advanced features, like voice calls and shared folders are not interoperable between the two services.

The program is available internationally in more than 15 markets.

Nothing beats taking a long well deserved road trip after many months of hard work. Buying a new camper is quite expensive. If you are thinking about getting a good camper, maybe you should consider getting a used one. Here are tips that will help you get the best User RV for sale Des Moines.

Choosing the right RV type

Think about the type of motor home you want to buy. The type-A motor home is one of the biggest and most luxurious of these homes. It has a bus like appearance and is spacious enough for a kitchen area, bathroom and living rooms. However, you also need to think about their disadvantages which include having low energy efficiency and being too huge and difficult to control on the road.

Type B motor homes on the other hand, are slightly smaller than the type A. However, they include most of the features that are found in the type- A motor homes such as air conditioning and good plumbing. The only disadvantage is that the RV’s have a lower towing capacity than the type A motorhomes.

The cost of the home

The main advantage that comes with buying a used RV is that it will cost far less than it would when new. In fact, the homes normally depreciate with as much as 30 percent after as little as 2 years. A 2-year-old vehicle is still pretty new and buying it at 70 percent of the original cost is quite appealing.

The condition of the home

The other thing that you need to think about is the condition of the home that you are going to buy. Normally, older RV’s tend to be worse in condition than the newer models. The condition at times also depends on the maintenance that was accorded to it by the previous owner. Inspect the engine to establish the condition of the engine and other parts.

These are some of the tips that can help you get a great User RV for sale Des Moines. Looking for a trusted RV dealer is one way to make sure that you get a great deal on a used camper. Browse site to learn more about the RV types available for sale.

Pennsylvania state trooper found guilty of first-degree murder

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by on 29-03-2018

Friday, March 20, 2009

In the United States, a suspended Pennsylvania state trooper has been convicted of first-degree murder for killing his girlfriend’s estranged husband.

Kevin Foley, 43, faces a mandatory life sentence without parole for slashing to death John Yelenic, a Blairsville dentist who was in the final stages of divorcing his wife, Michele. Foley’s attorney said he plans to appeal the decision. Prosecutors did not seek the death penalty.

Foley previously said he “loathed Dr. Yelenic” and asked another fellow trooper to help kill him. During his testimony, which lasted several hours, Foley claimed he was joking and had no true intention of carrying out the threat, but the Indiana County jury rejected that defense after about six hours of deliberations.

John Yelenic was found dead in his home on April 13, 2006, one day before he was planning on signing his divorce papers. Charges were brought against Foley in September 2007, more than 17 months after the murder.

Foley, who had been on suspension from the Pennsylvania State Police, was himself the final witness to take the stand Wednesday in the trial. Foley insisted he was innocent during his testimony, and even made jokes that the jury laughed at on a few occasions.

“I never made a threat with the intention of carrying it out,” Foley said under cross-examination by the prosecution.

When Senior Deputy Attorney General Anthony Krastek pressed Foley for what was funny about asking another state trooper to help him kill Yelenic, Foley answered, “There isn’t any joke. It’s just my personality, my behavior (with co-workers).”

Prosecutors said Foley killed Yelenic after going to the dentist’s house to confront him over the terms of the divorce. Prosecutors claim Foley slashed Yelenic several times with a knife and pushed his head through a small window. Yelenic bled to death.

“John has his justice tonight,” Mary Ann Clark, a cousin of Yelenic, told MSNBC. “John deserved this; he was the most wonderful person in the world. He died the most horrible death and tonight, this is his night. The system worked.”

Foley had been living with Michele Yelenic for two years at the time of the homicide. Prosecutors previously said Foley and Michele helped perpetuate rumors that Dr. Yelenic molested their son. John and Michele Yelenic had been separated in 2002. Michele Yelenic stood to collect Dr. Yelenic’s estate and a US$1 million life insurance policy, and could lose about $2,500 a month in support if the divorce was finalized, a Pennsylvania grand jury previously determined.

Michele Yelenic, who has not appeared at the trial, may face legal action herself, media reports indicated. A sentencing hearing for Foley is scheduled for June 1.
