Second Darwin’s sandwich shop opens in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA

Darwin’s Ltd. opened a second location of their sandwich shop at 1613 Cambridge Street in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in late May. It is situated across from Cambridge Rindge and Latin School. Previously limited to one location at 148 Mount Auburn Street, the second store seats approximately 30 people and sells sandwiches, coffee drinks, locally made pastries, as well as some produce and snack foods. The establishment also provides free wireless access through the WanderingWifi service. The shop plays music during the day; during this reporter’s visit to the shop, selections played ranged from David Bowie to The Strokes. The store is air-conditioned.

Key differences between the original store and the new one include the unification of the cafe and the sandwich line now behind one counter, handicap accessible restrooms, no beer or wine sold at location, and a lack of a loyal customer base. Although the recent months have been slow, business is expected to pick up with the return of Cambridge area students this autumn.

While the original location of Darwin’s was recently cited for lacking sneeze guards before the kitchen counter, according to the Cambridge Chronicle, the new Darwin’s has acrylic sheets along the front of their sandwich counter. The original Darwin’s has installed the sneeze guard at the kitchen counter the day following citation.

South Australia enters week-long lockdown to contain COVID-19 Delta variant spread

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by Admin on 05-08-2022

Friday, July 23, 2021

With five active cases of the Delta variant of COVID-19, South Australia begun a one-week lockdown on Monday. Announcing the lockdown, state Premier Steven Marshall declared “we have no alternative but to impose some fairly heavy and immediate restrictions”.

The first case out of South Australia’s active cases was presented to Modbury Hospital on Sunday night, having returned from Argentina earlier this month. The fifth, which Premier Marshall noted as “far more worrying”, visited The Greek on Halifax restaurant at the same time as someone who was later confirmed to be carrying the virus. Chief Public Health Officer for the state Nicola Spurrier said “if anyone has been at The Greek on Halifax they need to get into quarantine and get tested”.

In accordance with new regulations, there are only five reasons for South Australians to leave home: essential work, shopping for essential goods such as food, exercise, but only with people from the same household and within 2.5 kilometers (2 mi) of home, medical reasons (which includes testing and vaccination against the coronavirus, but excludes elective and cosmetic surgery), and caregiving.

Schools have closed for all but children of essential workers, with online learning having begun on Thursday. Face masks are also be mandated for those who leave home. ABC News reported that “support for businesses is expected to be announced…”, with all non-essential retail required to close under the new regulations.

Organic T Shirts A Promotional Item That Is Good For You And The Earth

Filed Under (Sport) by Admin on 04-08-2022

Submitted by: Miles Lovegrove

In this day and age, more people are looking for and using organic products. They don’t want to have to worry about eating items that may have pesticides, growth hormones, and other things that can jeopardise their health in them. They are also buying organic clothing.

There are a few reasons why offering promotional organic t-shirts to your employees and your customers is a good idea.

1. It shows your company is ecologically friendly

Earth friendly companies are being sought after more and more these days. Customers and clients like to deal with companies that care about the environment and about the earth as a whole.

2. Branded organic t-shirts will appeal to more people

News about organic food and clothing has become more commonplace and more people are going green because of it. When you offer organic t-shirts, you are going to appeal to people who may not be interested in your company otherwise.

3. Branded organic t-shirts are safe for everyone

Because they aren’t made with anything that is unnatural, printed organic t-shirts are an item that will be gentle enough for anyone to use, from babies and children to adults. They are also safe to use for people who have health problems or have sensitive skin.

Ways to promote you re branded organic t-shirts

1. Attend green conventions

One of the best places to market an organic item is, of course, a convention where everyone is conscious about the environment and the state that the world is in ecologically.

2. Offer branded organic t-shirts for ecological fundraisers

Almost every area has a group of people who are environmentally conscious and who are trying to raise money to help the environment. You can do some good for the environment and for your company by allowing them to sell your shirts to raise money.

3. Wear your branded organic t-shirt when out in public

Make sure that you give your employees each some branded organic t-shirts to wear when they are not working. People may not be able to tell that they are organic, but it s still a good way to advertise them and it may lead to people asking questions about your company.

4. Give them out as prizes

Branded organic t-shirts are one of those promotional items that make a good prize during a company event such as a picnic. They can be offered as door prizes or raffle prizes, or be given out to the winners of games.

More and more companies are offering promotional items that are organic and environmentally friendly because they know that is what the public wants. They want foods that are all natural and clothing that is natural as well.

Branded organic clothing is something that is good for both the environment and for the consumer. When we use items that are organic, the environment will be happier and healthier and so will we.

Branded organic t-shirts are an item that you can feel good about selling because they won t hurt the environment and they are safe and comfortable for your customers.

UAE launches national authority for scientific research

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by Admin on 04-08-2022

Wednesday, March 19, 2008

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has announced its first national authority for scientific research (NASR) to coordinate and fund scientific research in the country.

The national authority for scientific research was announced on March 7 by Shaikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, UAE minister for higher education and scientific research. NASR will begin with an annual budget of AED100 million (approximately US$27.2 million). The authority hopes to receive additional contributions from the public and the private sector.

NASR will look to fund research projects in various fields, including engineering, technology, medicine, water and agriculture, proposing specific projects to be competed for by researchers at universities and private research institutes.

“Projects are going to be selected to help promote scientific research and the growth of UAE society and we will compare them with international scientific research criteria,” Gulf News quoted Al Nahyan as saying at the launch.

NASR will also train scientists and develop programmes for promoting public science awareness. It will also coordinate with government authorities on the issue of intellectual property rights, by providing advice on how companies and research centres should go about protecting their discoveries in the form of patents or licenses. It will also provide scholarships for researchers in the UAE to work on international research programmes, and organise national scientific conferences. NASR forms part of the UAE’s strategic plan to improve higher education and scientific research.

Zakaria Maamar, associate professor at the College of Information Technology at Zayed University, UAE, told Science and Development Network (SciDev.Net) that, “This initiative is another boost to the research and development activities that are carried out in the UAE. It will definitely provide researchers with the appropriate funds to sustain such activities and promote best practices in the community.”

Said Elnaffar, assistant professor at the college of information technology at the United Arab Emirates University, told SciDev.Net that, with this initiative, the UAE is taking the lead and setting a good example by building a strong development infrastructure founded on knowledge discovery and research.

Trial date set for fraud case against Church of Scientology in France

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by Admin on 03-08-2022

Saturday, January 31, 2009

A trial date has been set in a fraud case against the Church of Scientology in France. The date for the first hearing has been set for May 25, 2009. If the Church is found guilty, then Scientology would be ruled illegal and would be banned from operating in France.

Prosecutors claim that the Church is engaged in illicit practices in attempts to sell their alleged self-help material. The Church also faces charges of illegally operating as a pharmacy by illegally treating individuals with prescription medications.

The charges come from an unnamed woman, who in 1998 purchased nearly 140,000? (US$30,000) worth of Scientology self-help material which allegedly included prescription drugs. After a few months passed, the woman said she felt like she was being scammed.

Following several complaints from other unnamed individuals and an investigation, judge Jean-Christophe Hullin ordered the Church’s ‘Celebrity Center’, and the seven managers to be put on trial for fraud and “illegally practicing as pharmacists.”

The special treatment reserved for the Church of Scientology Celebrity Center raises questions about the equality of the justice system and the presumption of innocence.

On September 8, 2008 the Church released a statement following the order to stand trial saying that they felt “stigmatized” by the French judicial system.

“The special treatment reserved for the Church of Scientology Celebrity Center raises questions about the equality of the justice system and the presumption of innocence,” the Church said in a statement to the press.

This is not the first time the Church has been accused of fraud in France. They have also been convicted of it several times, including the Church’s founder, L. Ron Hubbard who was convicted of fraud in 1978. In 1997 the Church was convicted of fraud in Lyon and 1999 in Marseille. The 1978 convictions included Hubbard and his wife at the time, Mary Sue, both now deceased, and two other Scientologists.

The 1978 convictions included Hubbard and four Scientologists after a seven year investigation into the Church by the French authorities. The court ruled that Hubbard and the others were using Scientology by making fraudulent claims that it was curing people from diseases to “increase the financial revenue” of the Church, and the ruling ordered Hubbard and the Scientologists to serve four years in prison.

However, Hubbard, along with the four Scientologists fled France, never to return, and never served a prison term.

Shopping For Two: Creative Gift Ideas For Couples

Filed Under (Food) by Admin on 03-08-2022

By Barbara Holbrook

It can be hard enough to come up with great gift ideas for individual people on your list, but it’s doubly challenging to come up with a combination gift for your favorite couple. It is possible, however, to kill two (love)birds with one stone, so to speak, especially if you have at least a general idea of the likes and dislikes of each. For instance, if he loves sports but she couldn’t tell a quarterback from a shortstop, a pair of tickets on the 50-yard line would delight only half of your dynamic duo. Here, then, are some suggestions that can delight times two:

An Evening Together

Many couples, especially those with kids, simply don’t have the time to share enough one-on-one, quality time with each other. Make a gift of offering to take the kids out for the evening, or even having them camp out at your place for the night. It’s a present that many couples wouldn’t dream of asking for, yet would love to have – peace, quiet and togetherness. Depending on your budget, you might also present them with a restaurant gift-certificate and/or movie passes, but the greatest gift is time, and they’ll love you for it.

The Spa Treatment

Just about anyone, young or old, male or female, loves to be pampered, and the couple on your list will appreciate the opportunity to have those tense neck and back muscles massaged, their aching feet soaked, their skin warmed and toned, and all manner of being refreshed, relaxed and rejuvenated to their hearts’ content.

A Toast to the Happy Couple

A good bottle of wine is often an appropriate gift, but it’s also a fairly common one. For a creative twist, why not have it be a monthly gift delivered to their door? There are many websites – ClubsGalore.com, GreatClubs.com, and FlyingNoodle.com, to name just a few examples — that offer Wine of the Month gifts, so even if you’re not a connoisseur yourself, their experts choose the tastiest and most interesting selections for you.

What if she likes wine, but he’s strictly a beer drinker? These sites also offer Beer of the Month gifts, so each half of your happy couple can get into the spirit. In fact, ClubsGalore.com also offers additional spirits, including vodka and bourbon. This site also offers combination packages so you can tailor your selections even more specifically.

And, for the teetotalers, many of these sites offer not only tea but coffee as well, each beverage presented as a monthly gift in various gourmet flavors.

Eat and Be Merry

Continuing with the monthly club theme, many of the sites mentioned also offer monthly goodies including cheeses, hors d’oeuvres, chocolates, cakes and ice creams. Like any creative gift, these are items on which the recipients may not typically splurge for themselves, yet which they’ll be delighted to receive. And, like any tasty food item, these are gifts that stimulate the senses and which the pair can relish together.

Knowing the couple is half the battle, but even if you know only one of the partners well, you can often get some clues just by asking a few well-chosen questions. For instance, while sharing a cup of java with your friend: “So, does Harry like coffee as much as we do, or will he drink pretty much whatever you put in front of him?” You’ll soon have the information you need to give the couple a gift they’ll both appreciate.

Police report drug haul seizure worth up to £30 million in Brownhills, England

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by Admin on 02-08-2022

Monday, December 2, 2013

Police in the West Midlands in England today said nearly 200 kilograms worth of drugs with value possibly as great as £30 million (about US$49 million or €36 million) has been seized from a unit in the town of Brownhills. In what an officer described as “one of the largest [seizures] in the force’s 39 year history”, West Midlands Police reported recovering six big cellophane-wrapped cardboard boxes containing cannabis, cocaine, and MDMA (“ecstasy”) in a police raid operation on the Maybrook Industrial Estate in the town on Wednesday.

The impact this seizure will have on drug dealing in the region and the UK as a whole cannot be underestimated

The seized boxes, which had been loaded onto five freight pallets, contained 120 one-kilogram bags of cannabis, 50 one-kilogram bags of MDMA, and five one-kilogram bricks of cocaine. In a press release, West Midlands Police described what happened after officers found the drugs as they were being unloaded in the operation. “When officers opened the boxes they discovered a deep layer of protective foam chips beneath which the drugs were carefully layered”, the force said. “All the drugs were wrapped in thick plastic bags taped closed with the cannabis vacuum packed to prevent its distinctive pungent aroma from drawing unwanted attention.” Police moved the drugs via forklift truck to a flatbed lorry to remove them.

Detective Sergeant Carl Russell of West Midlands Police’s Force CID said the seizure was the largest he had ever made in the 24 years he has been in West Midlands Police and one of the biggest seizures the force has made since its formation in 1974. “The impact this seizure will have on drug dealing in the region and the UK as a whole cannot be underestimated”, he said. “The drugs had almost certainly been packed to order ready for shipping within Britain but possibly even further afield. Our operation will have a national effect and we are working closely with a range of law enforcement agencies to identify those involved in this crime at whatever level.”

Expert testing on the drugs is ongoing. Estimates described as “conservative” suggest the value of the drugs amounts to £10 million (about US$16.4 million or €12 million), although they could be worth as much as £30 million, subject to purity tests, police said.

Police arrested three men at the unit on suspicion of supplying a controlled drug. The men, a 50-year-old from Brownhills, a 51-year-old from the Norton area of Stoke-on-Trent in Staffordshire, and one aged 53 from Brownhills, have been released on bail as police investigations to “hunt those responsible” continue. West Midlands Police told Wikinews no person has yet been charged in connection with the seizure. Supplying a controlled drug is an imprisonable offence in England, although length of jail sentences vary according to the class and quantity of drugs and the significance of offenders’ roles in committing the crime.

Bomb left outside police station in Northern Ireland

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by Admin on 01-08-2022

Sunday, June 20, 2010

An explosive device was left inside a van parked outside a local police station in the small village of Aughnacloy, County Tyrone in Northern Ireland. Army experts carried out a controlled explosion and have been examining the vehicle since. The van was left at about 10:00pm local time on Thursday night.

Police from the area have confirmed that around 350 residents in the area were evacuated and spent the night in three community halls. Since the report Aughnacloy is partially open and the A5 road is accessible, although there is little access into Aughnacloy itself.

The alert was raised during a telephone call to a newspaper office in Belfast. The caller used a recognised codeword and informed the newspaper the bomb will be detonated in an hour, which triggered an automatic response from police officers. Democratic Unionist Party councillor Sammy Brush said the evacuation seemed “fairly well organised” and there was “no panic”, but it had to be completed within an hour to ensure the bomb could be safely disarmed and removed.

The bomb is thought to have been left by Dissident Republicans, which have been responsible for other similar attacks on official buildings this year. The bomb was left in an unmarked white Ford Transit van, which witnesses reported had the engine left running. The detonation device was believed to have been triggered, but the 300lb worth of explosives had failed to detonate. Brain Kee, the Aughnacloy PSNI Superintendent said, “If it had detonated it would have caused widespread devastation in the village and it’s very likely that lives would have been lost.”

Tom Elliott, Ulster Unionist Party MLA for Fermanagh and South Tyrone, described the event as “deeply distressing.” He went on to say that “this was an apparently large and viable device, which was planted with just an hour’s warning, is deeply saddening for those who are committed to a peaceful future” and that such incidents were “becoming a familiar feature of life in Northern Ireland once again”. Michelle Gildernew, Sinn Fein MP for Fermanagh and South Tyrone, said those responsible for this act should “seriously reflect on what they are doing” and “[t]heir actions are no part of a campaign to bring about Irish unity and they have little or no popular support”.

A car, thought to have been used for the get-away, has been found burnt out just over the border in the Republic of Ireland. Mr Kee and the Irish Minister for Foreign Affairs Micheál Martin have asked for any witnesses to contact the Gardai or the PSNI immediately.
