European Aeronautic Defence & Space NV (EADS), the parent company of European airframer Airbus, has won a £13 billion contract to supply the United Kingdom’s Royal Air Force (RAF) with aerial refueling tankers to replace the nation’s current ageing fleet.

AirTanker Ltd., an EADS-led consortium, have signed a 27-year contract with the Defense Ministry to supply 14 new Airbus A330-200 passenger airliner converted for the task. They will be owned by AirTanker, who retains commercial leasing rights to five which can carry 290 passengers plus cargo, but will fly in RAF livery. They replace existing Lockheed Tristar and Vickers VC-10 aircraft. The first aircraft will be in service by 2011 and all by 2016.

Rolls-Royce, part of the consortium, will supply engines. France’s Thales will supply electronics, Wimborne, UK’s Cobham will manufacture refueling equipment and Southampton, UK’s VT Group will provide service management.

Last month, Northrop Grumman and EADS defeated Boeing to win a massive order for 179 tankers from the United States Air Force. Airbus has also inked recent deals with the Royal Australian Air Force, the Royal Saudi Air Force and the UAE Air Force.

The Historic Neighborhood Of Chelsea, New York

Filed Under (Property Improvement And Development Projects) by Admin on 13-06-2021

byAlma Abell

In West Manhattan is a small, lively neighborhood called Chelsea. Like many New York neighborhoods, it has strong roots. Yet, it differs from many with its refusal to remain in the past. It moves forward, embracing the present changes with its art galleries, indoor Chelsea Market, the High Line, revamped Chelsea Piers, modern high rise apartment buildings and condos in west Chelsea area. Yet, Chelsea still recognizes and respects its history.

The History of Chelsea

The origins of the neighborhood’s history are tied to the land. A British Major, Thomas Clark, retired to be a gentleman farmer. He constructed a Georgian style manor home on a lot at what now covers the distance of 23rd St. between 9th and 10th Ave. He called his new home, “Chelsea” in tribute to the great Thomas More. The family farm did not remain intact after his death. His daughter Charity inherited. She had married a Benjamin Moore. It was under the ownership of their son, Clement Clarke Moore that Chelsea began to change substantially.

The once thriving apple orchard became church property in 1827. The Episcopal Diocese of New York received it as a donation. Upon this particular piece of property rose the General Theological Seminary, its Gothic brownstone campus structures home to tubular bells. Ninth Avenue bisected the property and Moore began to subdivide the property along these lines. His buyers were wealthy New Yorkers.

Chelsea began to expand beyond these early divisions. Factories, expressly forbidden by Moore, began to grow and produce. This led to the construction of row houses and immigration, particularly from Ireland. Politics began to take over and the secluded district of Chelsea was altered forever.

Yet, it was not all manufacturing. In 1869, Chelsea saw the start of its now well-known theater district. In fact, it was a first for the city of New York. Here was an opera house. In Chelsea, Mary Pickford shot movies that were seen across the country.

The Historic District

While many buildings did not survive the years that passed, some have. In the Chelsea Historic District many structures remain some dating back to the 1800s; others are from the early 20th century. Among the most famous is the Chelsea Hotel. It has been the residence of many famous and infamous musicians and artists including William S. Burroughs, Bob Dylan, Dylan Thomas and Sid Vicious and his girlfriend Nancy Spungen. You should also visit the Chelsea Market in the old Nabisco Factory, the revamped Chelsea Piers, the repurposed Starrett-Lehigh building and the Empire Diner.

West Chelsea Condos provide a view of the historic era and make a modern statement. Yet, the neighborhood is never divorced totally from its memorable past. Time has moved on, but old structures remain, many revamped for the new purpose the present world demands.

Police report drug haul seizure worth up to £30 million in Brownhills, England

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by Admin on 10-06-2021

Monday, December 2, 2013

Police in the West Midlands in England today said nearly 200 kilograms worth of drugs with value possibly as great as £30 million (about US$49 million or €36 million) has been seized from a unit in the town of Brownhills. In what an officer described as “one of the largest [seizures] in the force’s 39 year history”, West Midlands Police reported recovering six big cellophane-wrapped cardboard boxes containing cannabis, cocaine, and MDMA (“ecstasy”) in a police raid operation on the Maybrook Industrial Estate in the town on Wednesday.

The impact this seizure will have on drug dealing in the region and the UK as a whole cannot be underestimated

The seized boxes, which had been loaded onto five freight pallets, contained 120 one-kilogram bags of cannabis, 50 one-kilogram bags of MDMA, and five one-kilogram bricks of cocaine. In a press release, West Midlands Police described what happened after officers found the drugs as they were being unloaded in the operation. “When officers opened the boxes they discovered a deep layer of protective foam chips beneath which the drugs were carefully layered”, the force said. “All the drugs were wrapped in thick plastic bags taped closed with the cannabis vacuum packed to prevent its distinctive pungent aroma from drawing unwanted attention.” Police moved the drugs via forklift truck to a flatbed lorry to remove them.

Detective Sergeant Carl Russell of West Midlands Police’s Force CID said the seizure was the largest he had ever made in the 24 years he has been in West Midlands Police and one of the biggest seizures the force has made since its formation in 1974. “The impact this seizure will have on drug dealing in the region and the UK as a whole cannot be underestimated”, he said. “The drugs had almost certainly been packed to order ready for shipping within Britain but possibly even further afield. Our operation will have a national effect and we are working closely with a range of law enforcement agencies to identify those involved in this crime at whatever level.”

Expert testing on the drugs is ongoing. Estimates described as “conservative” suggest the value of the drugs amounts to £10 million (about US$16.4 million or €12 million), although they could be worth as much as £30 million, subject to purity tests, police said.

Police arrested three men at the unit on suspicion of supplying a controlled drug. The men, a 50-year-old from Brownhills, a 51-year-old from the Norton area of Stoke-on-Trent in Staffordshire, and one aged 53 from Brownhills, have been released on bail as police investigations to “hunt those responsible” continue. West Midlands Police told Wikinews no person has yet been charged in connection with the seizure. Supplying a controlled drug is an imprisonable offence in England, although length of jail sentences vary according to the class and quantity of drugs and the significance of offenders’ roles in committing the crime.

2012 Report on Gender Equality and Development says US women have room for progress

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by Admin on 10-06-2021

Friday, September 27, 2013

Tuesday, World Bank released the 2012 World Development Report on Gender Equality and Development. The United States is referred to many times, often as a benchmark to foster understanding of recent gains for women in other parts of the globe. At the same time, United States women still lag behind US men in a number of areas.

In 2012, the authors note women in the United States still face challenges economically and socially. They are represented disproportionately in certain professions like teaching and nursing. They are paid less than their male counterparts. Jobs traditionally held by women also result in lower wages for men who hold these jobs. They are under-represented at the highest level of business, with only 28 of Fortune 1000 companies having a female chief executive officer. The bottom 20% of women economically have a slightly higher birth rate than their peers in the top 20%.

Immigrants to the United States from Southeast Asia and India have higher than expected male to female birth ratios, which the report authors suggest is partially deliberate sex selection based on cultural attitudes from home countries. In 2009, over half a million US women were victims of intimate partner violence. The report suggests US men have greater pension assets than US women. When compared to elderly US men, elderly women in the United States are more likely to live alone than with a spouse. US women are disproportionately under-represented in local police forces, accounting for less than 20% of all police officers. Women in the United States also bear a higher percentage of housework duties than men at 61%. When US women take part time work while raising children, they find it difficult to use that work experience to gain future full time employment. US women are disincentivized from re-entering the workforce after giving birth because of the high cost of childcare.

Many of the gains for United States women took place a while ago and took a long time to get. It took 40 years, 1870–1910, to see major improvements in the percentage of girls aged 6 to 12 attending school. In 1921, after women got the right to vote in the United States, the United States Congress passed the Promotion of the Welfare and Hygiene of Maternity and Infancy Act. This assisted in lowering infant mortality from 23% to 15%.

The report says affirmative action in the United States resulted in jobs transferring from men to women, but the authors hedged and did not draw a conclusion about the economic impact of these legislative efforts other than to say the impact was not negative.

Many of the legislative victories for United States women came early compared to developing countries. Property rights for women, while later than some of their European counterparts like Norway and the United Kingdom, started to come by 1848. That year, the Married Women’s Property Act was passed in New York. It was the first legislation of its kind in the country. Other states soon followed. Women got suffrage on a state-by-state level in the country until they got federal suffrage in 1920. Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 barred discrimination against women and allowed married women to make loans without their husband’s consent. In 1980, airlines were barred from discriminating against flight attendances for their marital status during the hiring and firing stage.

The number of United States respondents agreeing with the proposition “a university education is more important for a boy than for a girl” decreased from about 14% in the period between 1994 and 1999 to about about 9% in the period between 2005 and 2007. Similarly, the number of people who agreed with “when jobs are scarce, men should have more right to a job than women” decreased from 19% to about 8% over the same period.

The report cites current research from the United States and England showing the more education a mother has, the better the outcomes for her children will be.

Currently in the United States, females academically outperform their male counterparts in all academic areas including [[mathematics|math] and science. On the Programme for International Student Assessment math test though, US boys tested better than US girls by a score of roughly 495 to 480. US girls outperform boys on the literacy test with mean scores of approximately 510 to 490. In this regard, the report suggests US girls’ performance patterns resemble global ones.

Mali’s percentage of girls in primary school is equivalent to the United States in 1810 at around 34%. Burkino Faso is worse, matching the United States in 1780 with a percentage of roughly 25%. Niger’s current enrollment for girls is around 50%, around the same percentage as the United States in 1900.

In the 18 months since Andrea Muizelaar was crowned winner of the reality TV series Canada’s Next Top Model, her life has been a complete whirlwind. From working in a dollar store in her hometown of Whitby, Ontario, to modeling haute couture in Toronto, she had reached her dream of becoming a true Top Model.

But at what cost? Unknown to casual television viewers, Muizelaar had been enveloped in the eating disorder anorexia nervosa, which inevitably became too much for her to bear. She gave up modeling and moved back to Whitby, where she sought treatment for her disorder, re-entered college, and now works at a bank. Where is she now? Happy and healthy, she says.

Recently Andrea Muizelaar sat down with Wikinews reporter Mike Halterman in a candid interview that stretched to nearly two hours, as she told all about her hopes and aspirations, her battle with anorexia, and just what really happened on Canada’s Next Top Model.

Google doubles Gmail storage, adds text formatting

NB this subject is also covered in Gmail 1st Birthday; Storage capacity increased to 2GBSaturday, April 2, 2005On the first anniversary of Gmail’s release, Google has announced that it will increase the amount of storage available for the users of the web-based email service from 1 GB to over 2 GB. Additionally, they have added formatting rich-text features to Gmail. According to a page at the Gmail Help Center, while not all accounts currently have the formatting features added, “over the next several weeks, we are introducing rich formatting to all of our users.”

The increase in storage is announced on the main Gmail page with a JavaScript counter that increases the quoted available storage in relation to the current date. For example, on April 1 at 5 a.m. UTC the site announced 1025 MB available, 30 hours later — 2050 MB, and a week later it should announce a total of 2075 MB.

Unless Google adjusts the code behind the counter, the text will read “Over 2075” after April 9.

Code analysis performed by Wikinews writer Pingswept, and while believed to be correct, is original reporting and has not been verified by any external source. A more technical analysis is available.

David S. Touretzky discusses Scientology, Anonymous and Tom Cruise

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by Admin on 08-06-2021

Wednesday, February 6, 2008

David S. Touretzky, prominent free speech activist and critic of Scientology, discussed his opinions on the recent Internet backlash against the Church of Scientology in an interview with former Scientologist and Wikinews reporter Nicholas Turnbull. The recent conflict on the Internet between critics of Scientology and the Church has been spurred on in declarations by a nebulous Internet entity using the name Anonymous that the Church of Scientology “will be destroyed”. Anonymous has directed recent protests at Scientology centres across the world, which have attracted significant numbers of individuals supporting the cause. In recent e-mail correspondence with Wikinews, a representative of the Church of Scientology declared that the Church considers the activities of Anonymous to be illegal, and that Anonymous “will be handled and stopped”.

Touretzky, a research professor in artificial intelligence and computational neuroscience at Carnegie Mellon University, has been a prominent critic of the Church of Scientology since mid-1995, and has been protesting against Scientology vociferously since then; he has also run websites that publish material that Scientology wishes to keep suppressed from the public eye, such as extracts from Scientology’s formerly-confidential Operating Thetan (OT) materials. Touretzky views the actions of the Church of Scientology as being “a threat to free speech”, and has endured harassment by the Church of Scientology for his activities.

The Church of Scientology continues to suffer damage to its public reputation through increased exposure on the Internet and vocal protests by Scientology critics such as Prof. Touretzky. A recent event that focused intense attention on Scientology’s totalitarian attitude was the leak of an internal Church of Scientology propaganda video to the Internet video sharing site YouTube, in which celebrity Scientologist Tom Cruise spoke heavily in Scientology’s jargon and stated that that “we [Scientology] are the authorities” on resolving the difficulties of humanity. The declaration of war by Anonymous followed shortly after this leak, in the form of a video posted to the Internet.

The ongoing dispute, cast by some as Scientology versus the Internet, brought Scientology terms such as “SP” (Suppressive Person, an enemy of Scientology) and “KSW” (Keeping Scientology Working) into general usage by non-Scientologists from the late 1990s onwards; increased attention has been drawn to Scientology by the release of the Cruise video in addition to media coverage. This focus has caused an even greater propagation of these terms across the outside world, as Touretzky comments in the interview.

Wikinews asked Prof. Touretzky about the impact that the activities of Anonymous will have on Scientology, the public relations effect of the Tom Cruise video, the recent departure of individuals from the Church of Scientology’s executive management, the strategies that Anonymous will employ and Touretzky’s experiences of picketing the Church.

Facial Exercise Techniques: The 2 Main Facelift Without Surgery Facial Exercise Program Categories

by

Wendy Wilken

A facelift without surgery can be performed by means of two classes of facial exercise techniques. To choose which facial exercise program best suits your facelift without surgery needs can be difficult, as both are just as effective!

Many people, who wish to look younger, are shying away from cosmetic surgery which involves the scalpel, and instead going the facelift without surgery route.

This can include changing to healthier eating habits, using lotions, visits to beauty salons, frequenting health spas, or conducting their own facelift without surgery using their fingertips, by following some sort of facial exercise program.

On the internet, there are quite a few facial exercise programs for sale.

When you compare the prices of these facelift without surgery methods to the cost of plastic surgery, choosing a good facial exercise program could be well worth your while, before you spend huge amounts of money. And before you go through all that pain, discomfort, and risk!

If the facial exercise routine doesn t produce results after a month, or you feel it s not for you, then by all means, go for cosmetic surgery. At least you explored an alternative means to looking younger before getting the cut!

If you re tossing around the idea of first trying a facelift without surgery by following a facial exercise regimen, I suggest you take a before and after picture. Use the same background and face angle when you take the two photographs, and snap the after picture 30 days following the commencement of your facial exercise program.

I suggest 30 days, because this will give the program enough time to produce, or not produce results. Personally, I think you could be pleasantly surprised!

Facelift without surgery facial exercise programs boil down to 2 main classes:

1. The facial exercise stretch method. This entails stretching the skin and underlying muscles in a form of isometrics, using the body s own opposing forces. I like to call this type of facelift without surgery the facial exercise vector category.

Some people call this facial yoga, facial gymnastics, or facial aerobics.

By using your own fingertips, the facial exercise is performed by stretching the face tissue in certain opposing directions.

2. Stimulating and rubbing the wrinkle and loose tissue with the fingertips. Also the stimulation of the nodal energy point with pressure using the fingers, thereby opening blood flow to the area.

This entails massaging and pressing on the skin and underlying muscle, which plumps and exercises it. I like to call this facelift without surgery the facial exercise massage category.

Both facial exercise classes result in the patient shedding years off his or her looks, in a matter of days. Because facial exercise programs treat the causes of aging, and not just the epidermis, they are a very effective form of facelift without surgery.

Wrinkles and frown lines will smooth or disappear, and eye bags are reduced. Sagging skin and drooping jowls lift and firm. Dark ring under the eyes dissipate. There are also many other benefits to the body.

A facelift without surgery is permanent, as long as you conduct the facial exercises frequently to maintain it. Just a few minutes, 2 to 3 times a week, that s all!

You be the judge. If you wish to look years younger naturally, a facelift without surgery could do the trick. If you choose your facial exercise program wisely, you could be very pleased with the results!
