The United States capital of Washington, D.C. legalized same-sex marriage on Wednesday. Beginning at 6 A.M. local time (1100 UTC), couples began submitting marriage applications at local courthouses citywide.

Washington D.C. becomes the seventh United States territory to legalize same sex marriage. The bill was ratified by Mayor Adrian Fenty last December. Due to city’s territorial status as a federal district, the bill had to be reviewed by congress. The bill passed congressional review Tuesday night.

The bill faced opposition from many family values activists, who tried to stop the bill from becoming law. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts rejected a lawsuit to prevent the measure.

China overtakes Germany as world’s biggest exporter

Chinese officials have said that their country’s exports surged last December to edge out Germany as the world’s biggest exporter.

The official Xinhua news agency reported today that figures from the General Administration for Customs showed that exports jumped 17.7% in December from a year earlier. Over the whole of 2009 total Chinese exports reached US$1.2 trillion, above Germany’s forecast $1.17 trillion.

Huang Guohua, a statistics official with the customs administration, said the December exports rebound was an important turning point for China’s export sector. He commented that the jump was an indication that exporters have emerged from their downslide.

“We can say that China’s export enterprises have completely emerged from their all-time low in exports,” he said.

However, although China overtook Germany in exports, China’s total foreign trade — both exports and imports — fell 13.9% last year.

Make sure you can keep your past employees from entering your facilities so you can increase your overall level of security. Control Access If your company has several facilities and areas which not every employee needs to access, then you can control who has permission with an access system. Police report drug haul seizure worth up to £30 million in Brownhills, England

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by Admin on 03-04-2021

Monday, December 2, 2013

Police in the West Midlands in England today said nearly 200 kilograms worth of drugs with value possibly as great as £30 million (about US$49 million or €36 million) has been seized from a unit in the town of Brownhills. In what an officer described as “one of the largest [seizures] in the force’s 39 year history”, West Midlands Police reported recovering six big cellophane-wrapped cardboard boxes containing cannabis, cocaine, and MDMA (“ecstasy”) in a police raid operation on the Maybrook Industrial Estate in the town on Wednesday.

The impact this seizure will have on drug dealing in the region and the UK as a whole cannot be underestimated

The seized boxes, which had been loaded onto five freight pallets, contained 120 one-kilogram bags of cannabis, 50 one-kilogram bags of MDMA, and five one-kilogram bricks of cocaine. In a press release, West Midlands Police described what happened after officers found the drugs as they were being unloaded in the operation. “When officers opened the boxes they discovered a deep layer of protective foam chips beneath which the drugs were carefully layered”, the force said. “All the drugs were wrapped in thick plastic bags taped closed with the cannabis vacuum packed to prevent its distinctive pungent aroma from drawing unwanted attention.” Police moved the drugs via forklift truck to a flatbed lorry to remove them.

Detective Sergeant Carl Russell of West Midlands Police’s Force CID said the seizure was the largest he had ever made in the 24 years he has been in West Midlands Police and one of the biggest seizures the force has made since its formation in 1974. “The impact this seizure will have on drug dealing in the region and the UK as a whole cannot be underestimated”, he said. “The drugs had almost certainly been packed to order ready for shipping within Britain but possibly even further afield. Our operation will have a national effect and we are working closely with a range of law enforcement agencies to identify those involved in this crime at whatever level.”

Expert testing on the drugs is ongoing. Estimates described as “conservative” suggest the value of the drugs amounts to £10 million (about US$16.4 million or €12 million), although they could be worth as much as £30 million, subject to purity tests, police said.

Police arrested three men at the unit on suspicion of supplying a controlled drug. The men, a 50-year-old from Brownhills, a 51-year-old from the Norton area of Stoke-on-Trent in Staffordshire, and one aged 53 from Brownhills, have been released on bail as police investigations to “hunt those responsible” continue. West Midlands Police told Wikinews no person has yet been charged in connection with the seizure. Supplying a controlled drug is an imprisonable offence in England, although length of jail sentences vary according to the class and quantity of drugs and the significance of offenders’ roles in committing the crime.

Woman gives birth on New Jersey PATH train

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by Admin on 02-04-2021

Tuesday, January 17, 2012

A New Jersey woman, 31-year-old Rabita Sarker, gave birth on a moving Port Authority Trans-Hudson (PATH) train yesterday morning. She and her husband Aditya Saurabh were heading to St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital in Manhattan for a “practice run”. She gave birth between the Journal Square and 33rd Street stations at 9:49 am ET (1449 UTC).

Sarker boarded the Manhattan-bound PATH train at Journal Square already experiencing labor pains. At first she believed these were false, but soon realized she was in fact giving birth. A St. Luke’s-Roosevelt physician who was also traveling on the train came to her aid. Once train conductors heard that she was in labor, they switched the train to express service and bypassed stops to go directly to 33rd Street.

Paramedics and three Port Authority police officers were waiting on the platform of the 33rd Street station. “As the train came into the station, the woman had already given birth”, Sgt. Mike Barry of the Port Authority police said. Sarker along with her child were then taken to St. Luke’s-Roosevelt where they were in stable condition.

The couple has not yet announced a name for their boy but they have nicknamed him “Jhatpat”, which translates from Hindi as “Fast”.

Why You Should Have A Facelift Thailand

by

Shayne V

The idea of having a facelift Thailand doesn t appeal to many people until they discover the many advantages. There is no doubt that various cosmetic procedures are becoming increasingly popular. People are fed up with the aging process robbing them of their youthful appearance. More than 100,000 people in the United States alone had facelifts in 2009 with spending estimated at more than $662 million. That s great news for American surgeons you would think. But they are worried about the prospect of people going overseas for their surgery. In fact, it s already happening with tens of thousands of Americans and hundreds of thousands of others traveling overseas for a facelift Thailand.

A closer look at the above statistics reveals an interesting pattern. Facelift procedures in America have dropped more than 30,000 from their 2000 level. This is coincidentally the same year that the World Health Organization placed Thailand just 10 places below America in terms of healthcare. Suddenly, Americans decided that it was worth traveling to have a facelift Thailand in order to save up to $5,000 in some cases. As medical tourists flocked to the Thailand, they saw a country in the midst of change. They witnessed amazing improvements in the healthcare system, world class medical facilities with highly trained surgeons tying everything together.

Plastic surgery clinics in Europe and America are losing business at a rapid rate. If we are to use the above statistics, American plastic surgery clinics have lost at least $200 million worth of business on facelifts alone within the last 10 years. The rate in which they are losing customers is increasing with 10,000 less facelifts performed in 2009 than in 2008. So, where are they all going? They are having a facelift Thailand of course! Yes, there are other countries renowned for medical tourism such as Panama which offers procedures for approximately $2,500. Yet Central American nations have not yet caught up with Thailand in terms of quality.

Although it s always tempting to save a few thousand dollars, you must be aware that a facelift is not something you should compromise on. This is why such a procedure shouldn t be performed in Central American countries just yet. They may have made improvements but they pale in comparison when placed beside Thailand. When you have a facelift Thailand, you will be taken care of by the skilled hands of someone possessing the same level of training as surgeons in England, Italy and America, mainly because Thai surgeons study side by side with Western surgeons in Europe and the United States.

Aside from having a safe surgery which helps knock years off your appearance as well as making you feel better than ever, you will have a speedy recovery in a clinic that contains state of the art everything. Once you re ready to leave the clinic, there are a host of entertaining activities for you to engage in once you re ready for them. Indeed, an increasing number of medical tourists return to Thailand for a regular holiday within a year of their surgery.

Heating bills, oil price rise predicted

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by Admin on 02-04-2021

Wednesday, October 12, 2005

USA — A US government report was issued Wednesday predicting the rise of heating bills due to colder temperatures and impacts Hurricanes Rita and Katrina had on the nation’s energy production.

Local forecasters predict that most of the US will have a warmer-than-expected winter this year. However, households that heat their homes by gas can expect to pay 29.8% more in heating bills. In the case of colder-than-expected weather, an increase of 66% in household heating costs is likely. In typical weather, prices will rise about 47.6%. Households that use electricity can expect a rise of about 5% from last year. NOAA‘s 2005-2006 U.S. Winter Outlook calls for warmer-than-normal temperatures across much of the central and western United States, including Alaska and Hawaii. The Midwest, the Southern Californian coast and the East Coast have equal chances of warmer, cooler or near-normal temperatures this winter.

Around one third of the US crude oil and one fifth of the natural gas outputs in Mexico still remain closed due to hurricane-related damage. Seven oil refineries remain offline.

The Energy Information Administration predicts that the price of oil will rise to around $64 per barrel (42 gallons or 158.97 litres) in 2006, with $58 being the average for this year.

Wikinews interviews World Wide Web co-inventor Robert Cailliau

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by Admin on 01-04-2021

Thursday, August 16, 2007

The name Robert Cailliau may not ring a bell to the general public, but his invention is the reason why you are reading this: Dr. Cailliau together with his colleague Sir Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web, making the internet accessible so it could grow from an academic tool to a mass communication medium. Last January Dr. Cailliau retired from CERN, the European particle physics lab where the WWW emerged.

Wikinews offered the engineer a virtual beer from his native country Belgium, and conducted an e-mail interview with him (which started about three weeks ago) about the history and the future of the web and his life and work.

Wikinews: At the start of this interview, we would like to offer you a fresh pint on a terrace, but since this is an e-mail interview, we will limit ourselves to a virtual beer, which you can enjoy here.

Robert Cailliau: Yes, I myself once (at the 2nd international WWW Conference, Chicago) said that there is no such thing as a virtual beer: people will still want to sit together. Anyway, here we go.
