Brazilian tribe is neither a new discovery nor a hoax

Wednesday, June 25, 2008

In late May to early June of 2008, news broke that a previously undiscovered indigenous tribe had been found near the border between Brazil and Peru. Worldwide media was quick to publish the story and the accompanying photographs taken by José Carlos Meirelles. The photos showed people in full body paint aiming bows at the overhead aircraft from which the pictures were taken. Wikinews covered the story as well.

In its Sunday edition, British newspaper The Observer had a story called “Secret of the ‘lost’ tribe that wasn’t” which was about this “discovery” and revealed that the tribe had in fact been known to scientists, including Fundação Nacional do Índio (FUNAI), the Brazilian protection agency for Indian interests.

Some of the media got very carried away and started talking about undiscovered tribes

After this revelation, media newswires branded the original story a hoax. These hoax claims spread nearly as quickly as the original story. Rapidly, news sites even claimed that the photos were fake. The true story, however, is more complicated than that.

The Observer’s article featured an interview with José Carlos Meirelles, one of a handful so-called sertanistas that work for the FUNAI. These are field agents that map the areas of uncontacted indigenous peoples, so that their habitat can be protected. He admitted that his desire to protect these tribes had caused him to overstep his mission.

When given the use of an aircraft to seek out new tribes, Meirelles instead flew over an area where he knew a tribe had been observed decades ago. Ultimately, he was hoping to prove that FUNAI’s policy of not contacting the tribes they observe is better for the tribes. With this flight he hoped to find evidence that the tribe, discovered long ago, was better off for not being contacted.

“When I saw them painted red, I was satisfied, I was happy,” he said. “Because painted red means they are ready for war, which to me says they are happy and healthy defending their territory.”

The photos are of a real tribe, long known to Meirelles and other scientists within FUNAI, but protected under Brazilian law.

Meirelles says he has no regrets, because he just wanted to prove these kind of tribes exist and deserve protection. He said that Peruvian President Alan García had claimed that these tribes were imaginary and that he needed to prove they existed. In doing so, he violated FUNAI policies by flying over their area and taking pictures. Both are prohibited. Meirelles claims he will protect the exact location of the tribe’s territory, even if tortured.

When I saw them painted red, I was satisfied, I was happy

Former president of FUNAI, Sydney Possuelo, agreed that the publication of the photos was necessary to quell the doubt about the very existence such uncontacted indigenous peoples.

Survival International, a human rights organisation formed in 1969 that campaigns for the rights of indigenous tribal and uncontacted peoples, admits complicity in the distribution of the original story. Survival International was instrumental in getting the original story international attention.

Nevertheless, Survival International said it did not mislead media because it never described the tribe as “lost”.

“These Indians are in a reserve expressly set aside for the protection of uncontacted tribes: they were hardly ‘unknown’,” said Stephen Corry, director of Survival International in a statement. “What is, and remains, true, is that so far as is known these Indians have no peaceful contact with outsiders.”

“Some of the media got very carried away and started talking about undiscovered tribes,” explains Fiona Watson of Survival International. “There was this interpretation that this was a completely new tribe, completely undiscovered, without bothering to check with sources … Neither the Brazilian government nor Survival has ever used that word, and ‘uncontacted’ means they don’t have any contact with outsiders.”

Former adult film actress forced to leave teaching job again

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by Admin on 30-06-2020

Friday, March 11, 2011

Tera Myers, a former actress in pornographic films, has left her position as a science teacher at Parkway North High School in St. Louis County, Missouri after her past was revealed by a student. This marks the second such controversy involving Myers, also known under the names Tericka Dye and the stage name Rikki Anderson. She was suspended by Kentucky’s McCracken County Public Schools system in 2006 after her career in pornography was made public.

Don Senti, interim superintendent of the district, said Myers was on administrative leave from her position at the school at her own request. Myers’ request, granted “out of respect for her privacy and that of her family,” came after a student inquired about her pornographic career. The district said Myers passed background checks before being hired as a teacher in 2007, but it did not know about her past until the student found out about it online, because her career in the pornography industry was legal. A Parkway representative said the Kentucky school at which Myers last worked was contacted in 2007 to verify her references, but no mention of her suspension or stint in pornography was provided.

Myers will continue to be paid until the end of the semester, at which time she is to leave the Parkway School District. “We’re surprised, very surprised,” said Parkway spokesperson Paul Tandy. “At the same time we feel for her and her family. We do believe she has tried to move on with her life … Unfortunately, even though it happened fifteen years ago, [the video] is still there.” According to Tandy, Dye “was concerned about the impact it would have in the building,” and, on March 4, informed the school’s principal of her past after being asked by the student. Myers also was the coach of the girls’ volleyball at Parkway North High School.

Myers previously taught at Reidland High School in Paducah, Kentucky, and was suspended in 2006 after a student there discovered her pornographic career. That May, Myers defended herself, saying, “Anybody who has been in my classroom could tell you how much I love teaching and how much I love these students, and that should be what matters more than anything in my past.” Known as Tericka Dye at the time, she protested against her dismissal and even appeared on the “Dr. Phil” talk show.

Myers said she became involved in the adult industry after working as an impoverished exotic dancer in California.

Marketing In Phoenix: Fourth Generation Websites Are The Real Deal

Filed Under (Industrial Packaging Supplies And Materials) by Admin on 30-06-2020

Submitted by: Allan Starr

It seems apparent to us here at Marketing Partners of Arizona that we now have seen three generations of websites, and now have entered a fourth generation. Come with me now as we revisit the progression of this phenomenon:

First Generation It was, just get a website up, and you are among the elite marketers. Content was immaterial, just having one legitimized your business and told others you definitely were with it. The early examples, even those handled by marketing agencies or advertising firms were little more than flash pages. These online flyers contained little more than basic, bare bones information, but they offered the perpetrator great credibility. This was especially strong when accompanied by a URL on business cards, brochures and stationery. Company operatives would eagerly ask anyone within earshot, Have you looked at our website? Can you estimate how long it s been since you were asked, Do you have a website? Why, today, that would be an insult!

Second Generation These were more comprehensive, and actually ushered in the requirement for some navigation acumen on the part of the webmaster team, whether that be led by an internal staff member, business owner or outside public relations or Web design firm. Little more than electronic, print-oriented brochures, they, nonetheless, were characterized by a certain degree of sophistication, particularly in how the material was organized and presented. Now, entities who heretofore were price prohibited from producing four-color printed pieces for themselves and clients, could include colorful displays amidst the copy blocks.

Third Generation Indeed, in this phase websites had come of age with flash, blog windows, videos, sound, e-commerce capabilities, imbedded forms and no small amount of dazzle. Unfortunately, in the craze to be state-of-the-art it also signaled the birth of the website on steroids, particularly in the area of a feverish urge for information overload and to a regrettable degree unintended redundancy and irrelevance.

Fourth Generation The trend in today s websites, at least those we are asked by Marketing Partners clients to produce are far more basic. As the bloom has come off the overkill rose, website developers have been told, Keep it short, simple, but clear and strong. This, to my mind, is a stunning example of Back to the Future simplicity a new age of directness and meaningful content. Today s best practices websites seem to be trending in the direction that amounts to a refreshing backlash against the monstrosities that arose in the previous generation of website excess.

How is it around your business? I know our diverse web clients are now demanding clarity of message, super-clean layouts and calls to action. This is combined with a perceived need to include Contact Us response devices that are designed to provide a brief but adequate enough amount of information in order to help clearly determine respondents needs and wishes.

Shakespeare said, Brevity is the soul of wit, and marketers have finally come to realize that their online visitors don t want to devote much time to getting the drift of what is offered in terms of their own best interests.

HIV-positive man receives 35 years for spitting on Dallas police officer

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by Admin on 28-06-2020

Sunday, May 18, 2008

An HIV-positive man was sentenced to 35 years in prison Wednesday, one day after being convicted of harassment of a public servant for spitting into the eye and open mouth of a Dallas, Texas police officer in May 2006. The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that no one has ever contracted HIV from saliva, and a gay-rights and AIDS advocacy group called the sentence excessive.

A Dallas County jury concluded that Willie Campbell’s act of spitting on policeman Dan Waller in 2006 constituted the use of his saliva as a deadly weapon. The incident occurred while Campbell, 42, was resisting arrest while being taken into custody for public intoxication.

“He turns and spits. He hits me in the eye and mouth. Then he told me he has AIDS. I immediately began looking for something to flush my eyes with,” said Waller to The Dallas Morning News.

Officer Waller responded after a bystander reported seeing an unconscious male lying outside a building. Dallas County prosecutors stated that Campbell attempted to fight paramedics and kicked the police officer who arrested him for public intoxication.

It’s been 25 years since the virus was identified, but there are still lots of fears.

Prosecutors said that Campbell yelled that he was innocent during the trial, and claimed a police officer was lying. Campbell’s lawyer Russell Heinrichs said that because he had a history of convictions including similarly attacking two other police officers, biting inmates, and other offenses, he was indicted under a habitual offender statute. The statute increased his minimum sentence to 25 years in prison. Because the jury ruled that Campbell’s saliva was used as a deadly weapon, he will not be eligible for parole until completing at least half his sentence.

If you look at the facts of this case, it was clear that the defendant intended to cause serious bodily injury.

The organization Lambda Legal (Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund), which advocates for individuals living with HIV, says that saliva should not be considered a deadly weapon. Bebe Anderson, the HIV projects director at Lambda Legal, spoke with The Dallas Morning News about the sentence. “It’s been 25 years since the virus was identified, but there are still lots of fears,” said Anderson.

The Dallas County prosecutor who handled the trial, Jenni Morse, said that the deadly weapon finding was justified. “No matter how minuscule, there is some risk. That means there is the possibility of causing serious bodily injury or death,” said Morse. Dallas County District Attorney Craig Watkins stated: “If you look at the facts of this case, it was clear that the defendant intended to cause serious bodily injury.”

Contact with saliva, tears, or sweat has never been shown to result in transmission of HIV.

A page at the CDC’s website, HIV and Its Transmission, states: “HIV has been found in saliva and tears in very low quantities from some AIDS patients.” The subsection “Saliva, Tears, and Sweat” concludes that: “Contact with saliva, tears, or sweat has never been shown to result in transmission of HIV.” On Friday the Dallas County Health Department released a statement explaining that HIV is most commonly spread through sexual contact, sharing needles, or transfusion from an infected blood product.

Alabama postal workers and customers become ill, suspicious substance found

Wednesday, April 26, 2006

Six workers in the post office in Hueytown, Alabama developed breathing problems and 23 were sent to the hospital after a chemical used in the manufacture of fishing lures leaked from a package.

The post office, located five miles west of downtown Birmingham, Alabama, was evacuated, and Hueytown firefighters in hazardous materials attire inspected the chemical. The chemical was found to have leaked from an inadequately designed package, evaporated quickly leaving a garlicky scent, and discolored the flooring tile in the post office. Workers complained of symptoms ranging from breathing difficulties to vomiting to burning in the throat.

The chemical was later identified as “J.J.’s Magic,” a yellow dye for soft plastic fishing lures which contains garlic oil as a fish attractant. The manufacturer confirmed that a two-ounce bottle of the product was sent to a customer in suburban Birmingham and speculated that the container may have cracked in transit.

Second Darwin’s sandwich shop opens in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA

Darwin’s Ltd. opened a second location of their sandwich shop at 1613 Cambridge Street in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in late May. It is situated across from Cambridge Rindge and Latin School. Previously limited to one location at 148 Mount Auburn Street, the second store seats approximately 30 people and sells sandwiches, coffee drinks, locally made pastries, as well as some produce and snack foods. The establishment also provides free wireless access through the WanderingWifi service. The shop plays music during the day; during this reporter’s visit to the shop, selections played ranged from David Bowie to The Strokes. The store is air-conditioned.

Key differences between the original store and the new one include the unification of the cafe and the sandwich line now behind one counter, handicap accessible restrooms, no beer or wine sold at location, and a lack of a loyal customer base. Although the recent months have been slow, business is expected to pick up with the return of Cambridge area students this autumn.

While the original location of Darwin’s was recently cited for lacking sneeze guards before the kitchen counter, according to the Cambridge Chronicle, the new Darwin’s has acrylic sheets along the front of their sandwich counter. The original Darwin’s has installed the sneeze guard at the kitchen counter the day following citation.

United States helped Kyrgyz pro-democracy programs

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by Admin on 25-06-2020

Sunday, April 3, 2005

Shortly before parliamentary elections were held in Kyrgyzstan, an opposition-run newspaper ran photographs of a palace under construction for since-deposed president Askar Akayev. This newspaper received grants from and was printed on a printing press financed by the US government.

The US government itself confirms this. In fact, nearly one year ago in May 2004, Lorne Craner, US Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor revealed:

We did a project recently… in Kyrgyzstan where there had only ever been one printing press. We funded the operation of another printing press there so that newspapers that were once unable to print day by day — due to censorship and lacks of facilities — are now able to print much more often, basically every day now.

Kyrgyzstan became the nation with the highest per-capita foreign assistance level in central Asia after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Most of the money came from the US, under the FREEDOM Support Act, passed in 1992 to help former Soviet republics in transition. Money ear-marked for Kyrgyz pro-democracy programs totaled about $13.3 million dollars last year.

According to a US State Department statement, the programs receiving the money “focus on improving political processes and accountability of government institutions, strengthening civil society and public advocacy, and supporting independent media.”

Akayev, in an interview with RIA Novosti, said that the opposition which had taken over the government in Kyrgyzstan was supported “with financial and technical support from the USA.”

As proof, he cited a report which was posted on the Internet and attributed to the US ambassador in Kyrgyzstan. “The scenario was carried out to a tee. In it he writes that president Akayev has to be toppled, removed. And because the country is key, a neighbor of China, with a Russian [military] base, it’s necessary to increase influence there.”

The New York Times described this report as “crudely forged” and Kyrgyzstan’s new leaders have pledged to keep both the US and Russian military bases in the country and maintain friendly diplomatic relations with Russia.

Distribute your marketing message to letterboxes with a Flyer distribution and delivery company

by

Vikram Kumar

Flyers or pamphlets are small handbills meant for advertising a product or business and are used by nongovernmental organizations, individuals as well as private companies working on a limited budget and yet wanting to generate popularity quickly. They are one of the inexpensive and popular forms of one page wonder. Flyers consist of photocopied leaflets in black & white or glistening fully coloured ones with the information being printed on one or both sides. This mode of mass marketing is used for advertising concerts, political rallies, promoting new restaurants and night clubs, selling of discounted items and even for recruiting.

Flyer distribution and Delivery Company produces any size pamphlets. In the contemporary era with the advent of digital marketing, it was thought that flyers would lose its sheen; however this is not the case given the presence of letterbox in every house. It can be generated by having access to a personal computer, printer and a photocopy machine. There are many online flyer delivery companies that provide exciting deals on custom flyer printing demands.

Advantages of using Flyer Marketing System

Cheap and inexpensive: Flyers, unlike other advertising methods, does not cost much. Some of them can be printed on both sides with the relevant information and costs about a few coins per flyer. It is designed in a computer system and then mass production is done using a photocopy machine, hence does not take off loads of cash. For higher quality work, digital and off-set printers can be considered.

Easy to produce: Flyers can be produced and launched in a day unlike other marketing styles, which take months to conceive. It can be designed within an hour and then photocopied. This also gives the opportunity to make any update before it goes for distribution.

Easy to read: Flyers does not require professional designers and are simple and pointed. Only a few simple words relevant to the product are printed in large fonts to attract the attention of customers.

Greater reach to people: Any advertising plan considers its target customers and prepares the promotion accordingly. In case of flyer advertising, there is no limit to the number of copies Flyer distribution and Delivery Company will print. Hence it will reach out to more people who might not have been considered before.

Feedback: It has face to face interaction between delivery man and the customer while giving out these flyers. They will be able to tell the reaction of customers to their products and also explain them in detail about additional benefits of the product.

Disadvantages of Flyer Marketing System

Flyers do not have a long-term impact and many consumers take it for granted. Unlike many digital advertising methods, which are repeated on a periodic basis, here the consumers have the freedom of discarding it after reading, if not convinced for the product.

It can become expensive when printing for a very large group of customers. Also providing the contract to an incompetent Flyer distribution and delivery company will lead to wastage of money in re-constructing the marketing style.

Before choosing any

flyer distribution and delivery company

, it is important to analyse its competency and efficiency in delivering the service. There are many online

flyer delivery

companies providing some great deals.
