The Victoria Cross and bar awarded to soldier, Charles Upham, have been sold to Britain’s Imperial War Museum in London. The Victoria Cross and bar, also known as a double Victoria Cross, were only awarded to one combat solider, Mr Upham. The medals will, however, remain in New Zealand as they are on loan to New Zealand for 999 years, this is welcoming news to the New Zealand government.

The medals were not exactly donated to New Zealand as it is currently illegal to export the medals, but it still generous to donate them so New Zealand can still see the medals at the Queen Elizabeth II Army Memorial Museum. His family had requested that they be on view.

Amanda Upham and Virginia MacKenzie are Mr Uphams daughters and are the ones who sold the medals to the war museum in Britain. The medals were sold for an unknown amount of money, however it was known that they had wanted NZ$3.3 million.

The government had offered to buy the medals for $1 million, this was rejected by the two daughters which caused a lot of controversy. A collector had then offered $9 million.

Speaking in Hong Kong, Phil Goff, minister of defence, said: “I’m hugely pleased the Upham medals will now be held at the Waiouru Army Museum in perpetuity as part of New Zealand’s military heritage.” Mr Goff also thanked a trust that worked together with the museum to make sure that New Zealand was still able to view the medals.

Mr Upham had won his Victoria Crosses in World War Two. His first Victoria Cross was won in the Battle of Crete in 1941. And he won his bar in the Western Desert about a year after his first Victoria Cross.

A Victoria Cross is the highest medal available to be awarded for bravery in the Commonwealth Realm.

Study: Herd animals detect Earth’s magnetic field

Large herd animals may have the ability to detect earth’s magnetic field, concluded scientists in Germany in a report published in this week’s Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences after performing studies of cattle and deer grazing and sleeping patterns. The animals tended to face north-south oriented toward the earth’s magnetic poles. Hynek Burda of the University of Duisburg-Essen in Germany led the team that announced the unconfirmed study. Burda and his team gathered cattle data via analysis of Google Earth images.

The team originally intended to test for possible human magnetic field detection by studying the orientation of sleeping bags in outdoor campers, but it proved difficult to obtain data because humans usually slept under tents. Cattle were easier to observe, and 8,510 head of cattle at 308 locations demonstrated a strong tendency to align body orientation in accordance with the earth’s magnetic field. Other possible factors such as wind or sunlight direction did not supply a better explanation for the behavior.

I think the really amazing thing is that hunters and herdsmen and farmers didn’t notice it.

To compare against a second large species, Burda and his team analyzed data on 2,974 deer studied through photography, direct observation, and snow imprints. The deer demonstrated a similar pattern. “I think the really amazing thing is that hunters and herdsmen and farmers didn’t notice it,” said Burda according to a National Public Radio report.

Other scientists found the results of the study intriguing. Peter August of the University of Rhode Island in Kingston, commented: “I was really amazed at the consistency with which they found north-facing cows and deer. It was really intriguing.” No independent study has yet confirmed the Duisburg-Essen team’s findings.

This is the first study that indicates magnetic field detection in large mammals. Burda’s previous research involves naked mole rats, a small blind mammal species whose behavior indicates an internal magnetic compass. According to a report by Jeremy Hsu at MSNBC, “Previous research has shown that animals such as birds, turtles and salmon migrate using a sense of magnetic direction, and small mammals such as rodents and one bat species also have a magnetic compass.”

Canada’s social insurance assets pass $140 billion in fourth quarter

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by on 18-10-2018

Sunday, February 13, 2011

With a fourth-quarter investment earnings of $3.9 Billion CAD, largely driven by stock market rises, the Canada Pension Plan’s (CPP) assets rose to $140.1 Billion reported the CPP Investment Board on Thursday.

Rate of return for the quarter netted three percent, bringing the first nine months of the fiscal year to 8.3%. The fund’s broad exposure to equities, in concert with a good quarter for stocks both in Canada and internationally, was largely to be credited according to CEO David Deneson.

The assets value rose from $127.6 Billion March 31st 2010, to $138.6 B on September 30th, to $140.1 B December 31st. The $3.9 B investment earnings, 3.58 of which came from the 54% of the portfolio in equities, was partially offset by seasonal outlays of $2.4 B to plan members.

The fund was very active throughout the calendar year, and particularly active in infrastructure, real estate, and private equity. As part of a consortium they completed the $4.8 B purchase of UK-based Tomkins plc, as well as purchasing Australian-based Intoll for $3.4 B thus acquiring a 30% stake in the 407 Express Toll Route (ETR) near Toronto — which they expanded purchasing a further 10% stake from Spain’s Concesiones de Infraestructuras de Transporte, S.A. (CINTRA). They acquired a 25% equity stake in Westfield Stratford City, a retail complex adjacent to London’s Olympics venue, among many real estate ventures.

The CPP fund covers every province except Quebec, whose Caisse de Depot et Placement du Quebec is the only larger pension fund in Canada. The five-year annualised investment rate of return for the CPP reserve fund was 3.5%, its 10-year rate of return was 5.6%, at the close of 2010. The fund was established in 1997.

A Laymans History Of Unique Bathroom Vanities

Filed Under (Home Improvement) by on 18-10-2018

By Sebastian Angeloh

It was only in early 1900s that many interior decorators and designers started giving attention to bathrooms. Before that, bathrooms were tolerated as unavoidable in any house. The French started combining dressing rooms with bathrooms, thus increasing the importance of the once ignored area. Once the realization hit the designers, there was a rush to come up with most unique bathroom vanities.

In keeping with the trends of the times, wood was the dominant construction material. Many bathrooms vanities were just a wooden stand for the sink for the basin and a towel rack. Some designers attempted to create unique bathroom vanities by introducing exotic woods and hand carved fronts. Most of these efforts were however wasted because these bathroom vanities were just that, expensive vanities that lost their show after a while.

Improvements in indoor plumbing and changing tastes in interior designs were the main factors behind change in the designs of bathroom vanities. Design options were expanded to include drawers and cabinets. Many unique bathroom vanities of the era include multi-drawer options. Similarly, cabinets and shelves became a part of these fixtures. With the introduction of plastics, a whole new world opened up for the designers and interior decorators.

Dazzling colors and lightweight construction of these unique bathroom vanities sparked a new interest that has continued to this day. Plastics are very easy to form and mold into various designs. This gave full reign to the imagination of the creators and many unusual bathroom vanities were offered to the buyers.

Then came the 80s: a unique decade. The political and cultural atmosphere influenced everything and interior dcor is no exception. Two trends emerged as a result and each produced unique bathroom vanities. The dominant trend was introduction of themes. Many designers used a theme that ran across the house and was visible in everything from the color of the walls to garden decoration. Color played a great part in these themes and bathroom vanities of various colors were produces to fit in with any color scheme.

The surviving trend is still very much alive in the many homes. Many European designers used stone and marble to create unique bathroom vanities. This is continued to this day with many up class end bathroom vanities constructed entirely of granite and Carrara marble. These stones take a high polish and retain their show despite the abuse by water and cleaning chemicals.

Today, ceramics and glass rule the world of interior dcor. The nature of these materials nurtures the spirit of creativity. Many unique bathroom vanities seen today are made from glass, metal and ceramics. The ease of forming these materials in various forms and wide range of colors and hues ensures that each creation is unique from others. The fact that these materials are artificial and available in a number of qualities frees the designers from the dependency on natural materials. Today Italian and English designers lead the field in creating exclusive bathroom furniture and fixtures including vanities.

Next time you go out looking for unique bathroom vanities, keep in mind everything they went through in history. It is not something that we have now. It took decades to get to what we are able to purchase now. Next time you look at unique bathroom vanities, youll know what they are all about!

Schriner refers to himself as the “Average Joe” candidate, and advocates a pro-life and pro-environmentalist platform. He has been the subject of numerous newspaper articles, and has published public policy papers exploring solutions to American issues.

Wikinews reporter William Saturn? talks with Schriner and discusses his campaign.

Japanese survivor of both Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombings dies, aged 93

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by on 17-10-2018

Friday, January 8, 2010

Tsutomu Yamaguchi, the only Japanese civilian to be officially recognized as having survived both the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki by the United States in August of 1945 at the conclusion of World War Two, has died this Monday at the age of ninety-three, due to stomach cancer—one of the numerous illnesses that he suffered throughout his lifetime as a direct result of his exposure to nuclear radiation.

Mr. Yamaguchi, although he was against his nation’s involvement in the War, worked as a engineer for Mitsubishi—a company that helped equip and supply the Japanese Imperial Army. He was on business in Hiroshima at the time of the first bombing on August sixth. His almost direct exposure to the atomic explosion temporarily blinded him, ruptured his ear drum (leaving him permanently deaf in his left ear), and severely burnt the top half of his body. Three days later, having gone back to work in Nagasaki, he was approximately three kilometers away from the site of the second bomb. Although he was exposed to significant radiation in this instance as well, Mr. Yamaguchi was left relatively unscathed.

Following Japan’s surrender and the end of the War days later, Mr. Yamaguchi worked as a translator for the occupying American forces and later as a local schoolmaster, before eventually returning to Mitsubishi—which had since then become an automobile manufacturer.

In his later years, Mr. Yamaguchi became a respected lecturer who gave talks about his experiences, and publicly spoke out against the stockpiling of nuclear weapons.

For instance, in 2006, he addressed the United Nations General Assembly. “Having been granted this miracle, it is my responsibility to pass on the truth to the people of the world,” Mr. Yamaguchi said to the Assembly. He went on to say, “My double radiation exposure is now an official government record. It can tell the younger generation the horrifying history of the atomic bombings even after I die.”

When asked by the British Broadcasting Corporation what his reaction was to Mr. Yamaguchi’s death, the mayor of Nagasaki said that “a precious storyteller has been lost.”

Among the family and friends Mr. Yamaguchi left behind were his three adult children—who have also had health issues in their lifetimes thus far that they think may have be related to their father’s initial exposure.

Valuable paintings stolen from Greek gallery

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by on 17-10-2018

Thursday, January 12, 2012

Art thieves in Greece broke into the Athens National Gallery on Monday and stole three valuable works of art.

Among them was a painting by famous Spanish painter Pablo Picasso, dated 1939, called Woman’s Head which was a gift to the Greek people for their resistance to the Nazis during World War 2. The other two works were Mill by Piet Mondrian and a sketch of St. Diego de Alcala by Guglielmo Caccia. A fourth painting, Landscape, also by Piet Mondrian was dropped by the thieves when pursued by security. All three works stolen were stripped from their frames.

The police stated multiple alarms during the evening of the heist in other parts of the building had distracted the gallery guard. Investigating yet another alarm, he saw the shadow of a fleeing individual. Citizen’s Protection Minister Christos Papoutsis apologized for the loss, citing that the security at the gallery was “non-existent”.

The value of the works stolen was not yet determined by gallery officials. The artwork in question was on display at the gallery as part of an exhibition called “Unknown Treasures”, including works of Albrecht Durer and Rembrandt.

TESEV Report on Eastern Turkey for UNDP released

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by on 15-10-2018

Friday, November 24, 2006

According to a report released by the Turkish Economic and Social Studies Foundation (TESEV) for United Nation’s Development Plan, the per capita GNP in Eastern Turkey, an area predominantly inhabited by Kurdish people, is as low as seven percent of that of the European Union on average. The report analyzed a region of 21 cities in Eastern Turkey*. One of the cities included in the report, ??rnak, was reported to be as poor as Botswana, Southern Africa.

Other points highlighted in the report included:

 • 60% of the population in the region was under the poverty line. If this situation persists, people may start to migrate to Northern Iraq.
 • If 1% of the national income is spent on Eastern Turkey’s infrastructure and social investment for 7 years, the region will be enabled to finance itself. If the economic and social conditions in the region are fixed, the fragile relationship between the Turkish government and the Kurdish people of the region may improve.
 • Access to health services is a primary human right. Without access to health services, one cannot expect that people of this region can live in confidence. Health institutions should employ nurses who speak Kurdish so the patients can communicate with the health services staff.
 • The use of the private sector is not reliable as a solution. The government should act to remedy the lack of infrastructure in the region.

Telstra becomes the first in the world to switch to HSPA+ wireless Internet technology

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by on 14-10-2018

Wednesday, September 1, 2010

On Monday, Australian telecommunications company Telstra has introduced dual carrier HSPA+ standard for broadband Internet business customers in the Next G network. This is the first time this technology is being introduced on national scale. The bandwidths the users can deploy increased into two to three times, with Telstra becoming the world’s fastest national mobile broadband service. The switch started with enabling the service for premium users. After some feedback, Telstra may expand the plan.

The higher speeds for wireless are intended to simplify and ease multitasking of users.

John Paitaridis, Telstra’s executive director, network products and services in Enterprise & Government, said “One of the reasons we decided to launch first to Enterprise And Government and Business customers is that clients are saying that their ability to access applications quicker makes a difference to their business and when they start to equate time savings and doing calculations around productivity it does become a return on investment.”

Telstra Business Group Managing Director Deena Shiff also stated that the efforts aren’t as sudden as it might seem, having feedback of many users as the base.

Australians are telling us they can’t afford to be tied to the desk all day and these new speeds mean they can now access mobile broadband at speeds typically reserved for the office. We have been deploying the high-speed capability in the network since December 2009 and now, with the launch of the new Ultimate USB Modem, these new speeds are available to customers across all capital city CBDs and associated airports, selected metropolitan areas and in more than 100 regional locations. These high-speed zones cover approximately 50 per cent of the Australian population and match the areas of highest customer demand and will make the frustration of waiting around for files to download a thing of the past. In other metropolitan and regional areas, the Telstra Ultimate USB Modem offers typical download speeds ranging from 550kbps up to 8Mbps… Our customers have told us that they want higher speed mobile broadband so they can work more flexibly outside of the office and we are delighted to be the first in the world to offer these new blistering speeds on a national network. The new Telstra Ultimate USB Modem provides customers with the speeds needed to handle large files, multi-task and update cloud-hosted applications effortlessly on the go when they are in a coverage area.

Previous modems were able to reach peak speed 21Mbps, with real life speeds ranging from 0.5Mbps to 8 Mbps. The theoretically expected maximum of the new technology is 42Mbps with user speeds varying between 1.1 and 20 Mbps. The new speed is twice as fast. This is caused by that the dual-carrier “Evolved High-Speed Packet Access” technology allows networks to send and receive wireless data using two channels simultaneously. This technology can be deployed on Next G networks. Telstra switched to them in February, thus making the switch to HSPA possible now.

Telstra delayed the implementation of the new technology until elections end. This decision was intended to avoid wrong interpretation of them by Coalition. Coalition’s claims include that wireless networks can be an alternative to the Labor party “fibre-to-the-home” proposal to introduce more expensive wired Internet. The announcement of the new technology, initially planned on August 25, was delayed, with Telstra spokesman Craig Middleton explaining, “We just didn’t want to feel like we were influencing the [telecommunications] debate.”

The political parties have different plans on development and funds on the Internet. The Labor party aims to spend AUD 43 billion to bring 1 Gbps wired Internet nationwide, and the Coalition plans to spend AUD 6 billion to introduce a variety of improvements including upgrade of existing copper Internet as well as expansion of wireless Internet to support 12Mbps. Opposition leader Tony Abbott has said in the past that Australians shouldn’t assume wireless technologies won’t ever be comparable to fixed-line technology. Telstra’s upgrade shows that wireless broadband is reaching the 100 Mbps minimum speeds promised by Labor’s national broadband network.

Telstra has only 2000 devices which support the new technology. This is why the opportunity to try it out is being given only to the Business plan customers, and they receive it for the same price as they were paying for the previous NextG plan. Since October 5, the device will be available for sale, with the Business customers able to buy it with 75% discount and a prepaid data allowance. The upgrade is expected to cover roughly 50% of the population. This is happening at the same time as one of Telstra’s competitors Vodafone is doubling data download quotas on mobile cap plans.

As some testing showed, real life download speeds reached only about the half of the maximum. Telstra executive director of wireless Mike Wright explained that the predicted figures were the estimates, with real life speeds lower due to interfering environmental conditions: “It’s possible to achieve better than the typical user speed claims, but those claims occur in the ideal network environment with good signal quality. When you’re out on the streets you get a lot of variation where the network is subject to signal quality, your location and the network load.”

How To Do The Apple Cider Vinegar Diet

Filed Under (Lunch) by on 14-10-2018

By Peter Pantora

Losing pounds has not only become an issue about the appearance as there are different health problems that are associated when one is beyond the recommended weight. And since medical advancements for weight loss are either expensive or a bit scary, a lot of people have reverted to more natural ways of doing so. In line with this, increasingly becoming popular among them is the apple cider vinegar diet.

If you are interested in doing the apple cider vinegar diet, here are the things that you should do. One is to choose an apple cider vinegar that is made of good quality. Choose those that are extracted from organic ingredients and do not think much in the way of cutting costs for cheap ones may reduce the chances of its effectiveness, both in doing wonders for your health and your weight. Out in the market are also pill forms of ACV, but you would find that the contents would be with less concentration than its liquid form.

Another is to determine how you can fit the apple cider vinegar diet into your everyday lifestyle. Some would prefer to use them with salads while some would prefer taking it directly before meals. A concentrated tonic of about 1 to 3 teaspoons is said to curb food cravings and burn fats. Those who cannot take the liquid directly can, aside from using it in salads, can dilute it in 8 oz of water either hot or cold. A tablespoon of honey can also be added to make it easier on the taste buds.

With the apple cider vinegar diet you must remember that it is not an automatic solution or a magic bullet of sorts. Do not expect to achieve results in just as little as 2 days or so of using it. On one hand, there are some who think that this diet is just a fad and the acidity may just cause additional acid reflux instead of using it. On the other hand, some people attest to its effectiveness, not only in terms of health problems and skin improvement, but also with the weight loss factors. There is no harm trying out to see if it can do you wonder. What you should remember, though, is to take it in moderation as big amounts will probably do you more disadvantages, just as an excess in anything would. Also be patient. The effects vary from one person to another as each have their own specific body configurations.

Apple cider vinegar diet goes well with moderate exercise and everyday balanced nutrition. If not for weight loss, you can also treat the inclusion of ACV in your diet as an additional measure to get the necessary sustenance needed by your body. For those who want to be sure if an ACV will be compatible or will not affect your body in cases of medical conditions, consulting a doctor is a must. Good health should always be the main priority before thinking if you can fit into those old jeans.
