Gastric bypass surgery performed by remote control

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by on 13-10-2018

A robotic system at Stanford Medical Center was used to perform a laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery successfully with a theoretically similar rate of complications to that seen in standard operations. However, as there were only 10 people in the experimental group (and another 10 in the control group), this is not a statistically significant sample.

If this surgical procedure is as successful in large-scale studies, it may lead the way for the use of robotic surgery in even more delicate procedures, such as heart surgery. Note that this is not a fully automated system, as a human doctor controls the operation via remote control. Laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery is a treatment for obesity.

There were concerns that doctors, in the future, might only be trained in the remote control procedure. Ronald G. Latimer, M.D., of Santa Barbara, CA, warned “The fact that surgeons may have to open the patient or might actually need to revert to standard laparoscopic techniques demands that this basic training be a requirement before a robot is purchased. Robots do malfunction, so a backup system is imperative. We should not be seduced to buy this instrument to train surgeons if they are not able to do the primary operations themselves.”

There are precedents for just such a problem occurring. A previous “new technology”, the electrocardiogram (ECG), has lead to a lack of basic education on the older technology, the stethoscope. As a result, many heart conditions now go undiagnosed, especially in children and others who rarely undergo an ECG procedure.

Rachel Weisz wants Botox ban for actors

English actress Rachel Weisz thinks that Botox injections should be banned for all actors.

The 39-year-old actress, best known for her roles in the Mummy movie franchise and for her Academy Award-winning portrayal in The Constant Gardener, feels facial Botox injections leave actors less able to convey emotion and that it harms the acting industry as much as steroids harm athletes.

In an interview with UK’s Harper’s Bazaar, coming out next month, Weisz says, “It should be banned for actors, as steroids are for sportsmen,” she claims. “Acting is all about expression; why would you want to iron out a frown?”

Currently living in New York, she also mentions that English women are much less worried about their physical appearance than in the United States. “I love the way girls in London dress,” she claimed. “It’s so different to the American ‘blow-dry and immaculate grooming’ thing.”

Is Your Pipe Network Sufficiently Secure?

Is your pipe network sufficiently secure?

by

Sam Desilwa

For businesses involved in oil, gas or chemical transfer, no matter how limited the extent, new and existing pipe networks should be checked to see they meet the highest standards for secure containment. One of the main concerns is that many existing pipe networks, and indeed many pipe fittings available on the market today, are made from carbon steel.

Carbon steel has many uses in the transfer of non-hazardous materials in normal external atmospheric conditions (in sprinkler systems for example). It is however highly susceptible to corrosion, particularly from harsh atmospheric environments such as salt water. Additionally, carbon steel is more difficult to repair or cap using welds since, in its strongest formations, it is both highly heat resistant and far less ductile than other steels.

An additional problem with existing networks can be the poor quality of the pipe connections or of the pipe flanges used to secure those connections. Not only can flanges also be made from the same corrosion-susceptible carbon steel, in some cases the pipes will not be fitted securely within the flange. The resulting weakness in the connection again makes the network more vulnerable to corrosion.

Replacement of pipe fittings and pipe flanges with those made from a more secure stainless steel product is always highly recommended for oil, gas and chemical transfer. Austenitic stainless steel or the even more corrosive-resistant superaustenitic stainless steel may be the most suitable, depending on the substance being transferred. These are both also very easy to weld.

The alternative low-weight-to-strength ratio alloys of duplex and super duplex steels also perform well, and using these confers the advantage of being able to install much more lightweight pipe fittings. When it comes to securing pipe connections, ANSI-standard butt weld fitting pipe flanges are strongly recommended

At ChemiPetro we can advise on the suitability of both new and existing pipe networks, and provide any necessary alternative fittings.

Pfizer and Microsoft team up against Viagra spam

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by on 12-10-2018

Sunday, February 13, 2005

New York –”Buy cheap Viagra through us – no prescription required!” Anyone with an active email account will recognize lines like this one. According to some reports, unsolicited advertisements (spam) for Viagra and similar drugs account for one in four spam messages.

BACKGROUND

Spamming remains one of the biggest problems facing email users today. While users and systems administrators have improved their defenses against unsolicited email, many spammers now insert random words or characters into their letters in order to bypass filters. The Wikipedia article Stopping email abuse provides an overview of the various strategies employed by companies, Internet users and systems administrators to deal with the issue.

Ever since pharmaceutical giant Pfizer promised to cure erectile dysfunction once and for all with its blue pills containing the drug sildenafil citrate, spammers have tried to tap into male anxiety by offering prescription-free sales of unapproved “generic” Viagra and clones such as Cialis soft tabs. Legislation like the U.S. CAN-SPAM act has done little to stem the tide of email advertising the products.

Now Pfizer has entered a pledge with Microsoft Corporation, the world’s largest software company, to address the problem. The joint effort will focus on lawsuits against spammers as well as the companies they advertise. “Pfizer is joining with Microsoft on these actions as part of our shared pledge to reduce the sale of these products and to fight the senders of unsolicited e-mail that overwhelms people’s inboxes,” said Jeff Kindler, executive vice president at Pfizer.

Microsoft has filed civil actions against spammers advertising the websites CanadianPharmacy and E-Pharmacy Direct. Pfizer has filed lawsuits against the two companies, and has taken actions against websites which use the word “Viagra” in their domain names. Sales of controlled drugs from Canadian pharmacies to the United States are illegal, but most drugs sold in Canada have nevertheless undergone testing by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. This is not the case for many of the Viagra clones sold by Internet companies and manufactured in countries like China and India. While it was not clear that CanadianPharmacy was actually shipping drugs from Canada, Pfizer’s general counsel, Beth Levine, claimed that the company filled orders using a call center in Montreal, reported the Toronto Star.

For Microsoft’s part, they allege that the joint effort with Pfizer is part of their “multi-pronged attack on the barrage of spam.” As the creator of the popular email program Outlook, Microsoft has been criticized in the past for the product’s spam filtering process. Recently, Microsoft added anti-spam measures to its popular Exchange server. Exchange 2003 now includes support for accessing so-called real-time block lists, or RTBLs. An RTBL is a list of the IP addresses maintained by a third party; the addresses on the list are those of mailservers thought to have sent spam recently. Exchange 2003 can query the list for each message it receives.

Record number of bicycles sold in Australia in 2006

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by on 10-10-2018

Thursday, January 4, 2007

Bicycle sales in Australia have recorded record sales of 1,273,781 units for 2006, exceeding car sales by 32 percent. It is the fifth year in a row that the bicycle industry has sold more than one million units, a figure yet to be realised by car manufacturers.

The Cycling Promotion Fund (CPF) spokesman Ian Christie said Australians were increasingly using bicycles as an alternative to cars. Sales rose nine percent in 2006 while the car market stalled. Mr Christie said people were looking to cut their fuel costs and improve their fitness.

Mr Christie said organisations were beginning to supply bicycles as a company vehicle. “There is an emerging trend towards people using bikes as their official company-supplied vehicle in place of the traditional company car,” he said.

“Some of Australia’s biggest corporations now have bicycle fleets, and when you add in government organisations, we now know of at least 50 organisations which operate fleets of bikes.”

“Although the company bicycle is a long way from taking over from the company car, it’s an important trend when you consider that nearly half of all cars sold are to company fleets.”

The CPF claims most commutes to work are less than 5 kilometres (3 miles) making bicycle travel a viable alternative.

Hope fades for families of trapped Mexican miners

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by on 10-10-2018

Wednesday, February 22, 2006

Almost 600 desperate family members and others remained camped outside the Pasta de Conchos coal mine near San Juan de Sabinas, in the northern Mexico state of Coahuila where 65 Mexican miners were trapped by a gas explosion around 2:30 a.m. (0830 GMT) Sunday. Some are threatening to storm the mine while soldiers are trying to keep them calm and rescuers continue to pick through the rock and debris with hand tools, fearing that any power equipment might set off another explosion.

The local newspaper’s headline caused panic by quoting one of over a dozen surviving miners who were close enough to the exits to escape: “They are surely dead,” (La Prensa de Monclova). However, Arturo Vilchis, Civil Protection Director, refused to speculate on the condition of the miners, while Javier de la Fuente, an engineering contractor with mine owner Grupo México S.A. de C.V. also tried to hold out some hope.

The men were each supposed to be carrying oxygen tanks, each with a six hour supply, and there’s some hope that they could reach other oxygen supply tanks, or that some air might be reaching them through the ventilation shafts into which rescuers have been pumping more oxygen since shortly after the explosion.

Juan Rebolledo, vice president of international affairs for Grupo México, assured onlookers that U.S. mining experts were on the way, and officials at the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration have confirmed that they’ve sent a specialized equipment truck and several mining experts which should arrive at the mine site on Wednesday afternoon.

Meanwhile Consuelo Aguilar, a spokeswoman for the National Miners’ Union, called for an investigation into Grupo México’s responsibility for the disaster. Pedro Camarillo, a federal labor official, said nothing unusual was found during a routine evaluation in early February.

Wedding Planning: One Month From The Big Day

Filed Under (Catering Services) by on 09-10-2018

Submitted by: Miguel Rosillo

The months leading up to your wedding day are sure to be some of the most hectic times of your entire life. When you first decide to marry someone you will spend weeks in bliss before the reality of the huge event you are about to plan finally sets in.

There is a reason that people usually wait a year after they become engaged to actually get married. It is because a wedding requires an extraordinary amount of planning. There are venues to book, caterers to hire, photographers to hunt down, and usually hundreds of people to contact and invite. It can be a stressful time.

But after months of planning, the big day eventually creeps closer and closer. When you finally find yourself a month before your wedding day, you should have most things in order already. However, this is the time to make sure you have all of your final preparations in order. Here is a quick and easy checklist to make sure you are prepared when your wedding day finally comes.

Apply for your Marriage License

A marriage license is like your driver s permit. It doesn t actually marry you. It just says that you are allowed to get married. Regulations for getting your marriage license are different in just about every state. It is important that you contact the city or town clerk s office a month before your wedding day to check on waiting periods and how long your license will be valid for.

Some states require a blood test, and there may also be a small fee for your license. You will need to bring identification that could include your birth certificate, driver s license or other types of identification. All of this is different depending on where you live, so contact your local government office and see what you need to bring.

Talk to your Photographe

Of course, you should have booked your photographer months in advance, but the final month is when you need to sit down with them or call them on the phone to go over all the details. A good time to talk about the timeline of your wedding day with your photographer is about two weeks in advance. Keep in mind that they will normally have weddings booked every weekend, so if you talk to them too far ahead of time, they might get your information mixed up with someone else s.

Just talk to them about when to show up and the general flow of the day. You may also want to look up other people s wedding photos that you liked and send them to your photographer so they can get an idea of the type of photography you like. Make a shot list that contains all the must-have moments of your day.

Have your Final Gown Fitting

It is a good idea to bring a bridesmaid or two with you to your final gown fitting. This way they will learn all the tricks of your dress, like how to bustle the train and button up the back. If you have a really big dress, you ll also want to do a few dry run attempts at going to the bathroom in case you ll need help!

Talk to the Catere

While you have probably had your wedding menu in mind for months, this is now the time to go over the final wedding menu with your caterer. You should try to have a vegetarian or vegan option available in case any of your guests have dietary restrictions. Also, it is always polite to provide meals for your DJ, photographer, and videographer. These people are working a long day and they ll do a better job on a full stomach.

Schedule your Rehearsal

If you are doing a wedding rehearsal and/or rehearsal dinner, the final month is the time to plan it. It is usually a good idea to just do this the night before your wedding. That way, if anyone is coming in from out of town, they can just get there a night early, rather than a full week.

Plan for Hair and Makeup

Ask yourself if you plan on hiring a makeup artist and hairstylist or if you are going to do it yourself. If you hire someone do it a month in advance to meet with them to try out different styles and colors.

If you are going to do it on your own or with a friend, invite your bridesmaids and friends over a few weeks in advance so you can try out a few different options.

Everything Else

These are just a few of the things to remember in your last month. You also need to print out your wedding program, confirm times with your bridal party and make sure all of your vendors know when they should arrive. Your maid-of-honor or your mother should also try to contact any guests who never sent back their RSVP.

Try not to get too overwhelmed in the last month before your wedding. Just take things one step at a time and be prepared for problems to arrive. If you get too freaked out, call up your bridesmaids and ask them if they can help. That s part of their job!

Oil spill reported in Gulf of Mexico

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by on 09-10-2018

Tuesday, December 26, 2006

At least 21,000 gallons of crude oil has spilled into the Gulf of Mexico near the United States mainland coast, about 30 miles off the shore of Galveston, Texas. The U.S. Coast Guard says that oil is still leaking at a rate of 80 to 400 gallons a day.

The High Island Pipeline began to leak on Sunday and was immediately shut down when a pressure loss was detected. The pipeline is owned by Plains All American Pipeline who state that the incident is “under investigation” and that officials are working to “minimize the impact of the incident.”

“A medium crude oil pipeline ruptured 30 miles southeast of Galveston, Texas, and leaked approximately 21,000 gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico Sunday, December 24,” said a press release by Coast Guard.

“There’s a 60-yard-wide oil sheen that extends for about half a mile. It is still leaking slowly, about 80 to 400 gallons a day,” added the Coast Guard.

Reports say that the oil is traveling away from any shoreline and that remaining oil is being suctioned out of the pipeline. Ships in the area have not been diverted.

“All appropriate agencies have been notified. Plains, the U.S. Coast Guard, and the Texas General Land Office are working within a unified command system consisting of Federal and state agencies and oil spill response organizations to manage and mitigate this incident. In addition, Plains has activated its spill response plan to contain and clean up the spill. At present, Plains has mobilized Airborne Support, Inc., Clean Gulf Associates and other additional resources in an effort to minimize the consequences of the incident,” said a press release by the Plains oil company.

So far, no injuries have been reported.

Fiddle Legend Vassar Clements dead at 77

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by on 08-10-2018

Wednesday, August 17, 2005

Vassar Clements, age 77, a legendary fiddle player who took bluegrass music from an obscure cultural art form to a mainstream influence, and who played on over 2000 albums, passed away at his Goodlettsville, Tennessee home August 16th 2005 at 8:35 am Nashville time (CST) from lung cancer which had metastasized to his liver and brain.

Mr. Clements taught himself to play the fiddle at age 7, and though he had no formal training was recognized as one of the world’s most versatile fiddle players and was considered a virtuoso. The first song he learned was “There’s an Old Spinning Wheel in the Parlor”. He described his talent saying, “It was God’s gift, something born in me. I was too dumb to learn it any other way. I listened to the (Grand Ole) Opry some. I’d pick it up one note at a time. I was young, with plenty of time and I didn’t give up. You’d come home from school, do your lessons and that’s it. No other distractions. I don’t read music. I play what I hear.”

He didn’t always earn his living playing music, though. In the mid-1960s he was employed briefly at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, where he worked on plumbing. He also performed several other blue-collar jobs including work in a Georgia paper mill, as switchman for Atlantic Coast Railroad; he even sold insurance and once owned a potato chip franchise.

In his 50 year career he played with artists ranging from Woody Herman, and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band to The Grateful Dead, Linda Ronstadt and Paul McCartney, and earned at least five Grammy nominations and numerous professional accolades. He once recorded with the pop group the Monkees by happenstance, when he stayed behind after an earlier recording session. He also appeared in Robert Altman‘s 1975 film “Nashville”.

His 2005 Grammy award for best country instrumental performance was for “Earl’s Breakdown,” by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, and featured Mr. Clements, Earl Scruggs, Randy Scruggs and Jerry Douglas.

Mr. Clements, whose last performance was February 4 in Jamestown, N.Y., was hospitalized earlier this year for 18 days to receive chemotherapy and other treatment. He had been diagnosed in March 2005.

Born in Kinard, South Carolina, his musical career began at age 14 when he associated with Bill Monroe, and later officially joined the Blue Grass Boys band where he remained for seven years. In 1957 he joined bluegrass band Jim & Jesse McReynolds where he remained until 1962. In 1967 he returned to Nashville where he became a much sought after studio musician.

After a brief touring stint with Faron Young he joined John Hartford‘s Dobrolic Plectral Society in 1971 when he met guitarist Norman Blake and Dobro player Tut Taylor, and recorded Aereo Plain, a widely acclaimed newgrass album that helped broaden the bluegrass market and sound. After less than a year he joined Earl Scruggs, who first earned widespread renown for playing the theme to sitcom The Beverly Hillbillies.

His 1972 work with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band on their album Will the Circle Be Unbroken earned him even wider acclaim, and later worked with the Grateful Dead’s Wake of the Flood and Jimmy Buffett‘s A White Sport Coat and a Pink Crustacean.

Though he played numerous instruments, Mr. Clements indicated that he chose the fiddle over guitar recalling that, “I picked up a guitar and fiddle and tried them both out. The guitar was pretty easy, but I couldn’t get nothing out of the fiddle. So every time I’d see those instruments sitting side by side, I’d grab that fiddle.”

Big band and swing music were considerable influences upon his style and musical development, and he said that, “Bands like Glenn Miller, Les Brown, Tommy Dorsey, Harry James and Artie Shaw were very popular when I was a kid. I always loved rhythm, so I guess in the back of my mind the swing and jazz subconsciously comes out when I play, because when I was learning I was always trying to emulate the big-band sounds I heard on my fiddle.”

His last album ‘Livin’ With the Blues’, released in 2004, featured guest appearances by Elvin Bishop, Norton Buffalo, Maria Muldaur and others.

Mr. Clements’ daughter Midge Cranor wrote on his website [1] that “As I was still holding his hand his breathing stopped. I looked at the clock and it was 7:20 am.”

Mr. Clements’ remains have been transported to Bond Memorial Chapel, 1098 Weston Drive, Mt. Juliet, TN 37122; (615) 773-2663.
